LSE personal statement

Hi, I'm hoping to apply to LSE's economics and economic history course next year, and history and economics at my other choices. I know LSE is quite picky about personal statements, and I suppose to a certain extent I would have to tailor my personal statement towards them. Would I be disadvantaged if I wrote a bit about more general history (i.e. other than just economic history) or would they be accepting of the fact that literally no other uni offers their course? You'd expect it would be fine but from what I've heard about LSE they don't really seem to give a ****.

i'm applying to hist+econ choices too! but pure econhist LSE rather than econ+econhist. since my first choice is LSE, my uni advisor told me to tailor it exclusively to LSE's course, as apparently they really value personal statements fitting their course structures, but if yours isn't then you might as well prioritise your first choice instead. i still think you should prioritise economic history in your PS regardless because you'd have to justify your choice of joint honours rather than pure history.

Yes obviously i will make sure to focus on economic history, but I do have good things to say about (and more importantly a deep interest in) other areas of history, and it would seem a shame to miss those out. Probably the best thing to do is just to write my personal statement and see how much room I really have. Where else are you applying, and what stats do you have?

Try to write about the LSE course before anything else. 🙂

again, i don’t know if lse is your first choice or not, so my opinion on whether you should include general history varies. if it is, i would say stick to economic history for the non-econ part of your ps. you don’t have a choice but to be selective.
apart from lse economic history, i’m applying to oxford history, edinburgh history+economics, manchester modern history with economics, and an undecided option. gcses are 99999999998, my school does AS so they don’t give us our predicteds til a while after results are out but i got 3As in my AS mocks. how about you?

Yeah I agree tbh, and huge well done with your grades. I've kind of worked it out now and im writing a little bit about my wider history interests sort of as an extracurricular, if you get me? Box 1 and 2 (hate the new format btw) ill just write about economic history and economics, though I don't think I will separate them. And yes I'm having to be really selective with what I've written so far, 4000 characters is barely anything ☹️ . I'm applying to Oxford, St Andrews, Edinburgh and York, A*A*A*A*A* and 999998888776. I didn't want to apply to any London unis bc I live here alr and kind of want to get out, but LSE's course looked so interesting so I made an exception lol - it is my third choice tho somehow

thank you, 5A* is incredible! what subjects do you take?
i find the boxes very inconvenient too - i'm going with a more 'narrative' approach on how my interest developed and the separation of the three sections made having a coherent essay close to impossible 😔

Maths, FM, physics, history, epq - wbu?

I'm trying to get around it by just putting different paragraphs in different boxes without worrying too much about the title of the box (apparently unis don't care what you put in which box). It does destroy the flow and coherence a bit, which is a pain, though I think as long as you have all the relevant stuff down with good insights your fine - the new format is kind of designed to make sure flow doesn't matter anymore.

eng lang+lit (my school offers the combined a-level), history, econ, maths :-) that’s a good strategy!
