Should I take a gap year in this situation

For context. I finished my BTEC Level 3 in engineering and got a Distinction Star, Distinction Star, Distinction.
I firmed the UoN for Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
I'm thinking about taking a gap year because I'm worried that The University of Nottingham isn't good enough.
If I take a gap year and reapply to unis like Manchester or Southampton, I'll have to do an a level in maths which I'm cool with since I got distinctions in all my maths units in my BTEC.
The problem is how am I going to get the predicted grades for the A level maths since I'll be self studying.
Should I take the gap year and do the A level maths? Is it too risky with no predicted grades?

Hey student! 😊

I’m really proud of you getting high grades in your BTEC is a huge achievement your strong performance in these subjects shows your potential.

It’s great to hear you’re considering the University of Southampton. You’re definitely on the right track. It’s a top uni for engineering and very supportive. Plus, it’s well respected by employers and has fantastic industry links.

Here’s some good news:
You can actually check the University of Southampton website now to see the subjects available through Clearing, and ask if they’ll accept you based on your BTEC grades alone. Because for some engineering programmes, they do accept BTEC students with DDD or DDD* especially if your BTEC grades are strong (which yours clearly are!).

That means:
👉 You might not need to take a gap year
👉 You might not need to do A-level Maths at all
👉 You could still join your dream uni this September!

This route would be less risky and save you time.

So definitely check the website, ring Southampton (or even email admissions beforehand if you want a clearer idea now), explain your qualifications and grades, and ask if they’d consider you for Electrical and Electronic Engineering through Clearing.

Let me know if you've got any more questions I’m here to help! 🙌✨

Best wishes

Thank you so much for your input, it means a lot to me. I've sent an email the moment I saw this. I'm hoping they reply quickly because I signed an accomodation contract a few days ago, but there's a "cooling-off period" clause that allows me to terminate it with no penalty.I'll update you when they reply. Again, thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

I'm worried that The University of Nottingham isn't good enough.
Its one of the best Unis in the UK with a solid reputation for STEM and Engineering.
Stop worrying.

Another question, will Southampton make me do a foundation year If I don't have the A level, even with my performance in my BTEC?

If so I'd rather stick with Nottingham as I don't want to be a year behind in starting my career.

I've made a similar post on Reddit and another person said something similar, that the difference between Nottingham and unis like Southampton for Electrical and Electronic Engineering is negligible.

You're right, I am worried, I'm under a lot of pressure since this is a decision for my future.

Thanks for your input.

Hi @71357, unfortunately we're not able to answer this ourselves, but the admissions team should be able to assist you. You can view the courses we have available via Clearing on our website here: Clearing course list | University of Southampton 🙂 . If you have any more questions, please let us know!
