Is it normal to be frustrated with your Student Union?

Sorry for the formatting, thought I would get this forums opinion on this.
Criminlogy student, Somewhere on the south coast

First year, I was super active within this union- I was a officer who attended many council and university meetings, it felt like a second job but I enjoyed doing it as it felt like I was making a difference, near the end of it I even opened a society aiming to improve my local area and attend different local venues. We have gained a big group of friends who are very close. I was even nominated for a couple of awards and got a personal recomendation from SU Staff on linkedin.

Second year I applied for a higher role within the university and attained it. Unfortunately, I missed the training due to a family emergency. The union simply said, "to bad, so sad. Go to advise service if you are struggling"

This felt like a cop out to me so I complained. the union then closed my complaint, without giving me any notes why. They were also late with repling to it.

I then third year, joined our media organisation had a amazing time actually doing it and being a committee member, but due to stupid descisions and general fustration and bullying and isolation from other committee members I was removed and banned from said organisation.

I dont really know what to think. I would like to think it would have ended on a sweeter note.

I would appreciate it if any SU accounts would reply

Hi Dragon,

I'm really sorry to hear you've experienced bullying from peers and I can hear how frustrating this situation is for you.

It sounds like you have indeed been treated unfairly - they should not have closed your complaint without reason and as a committee, all members should be prepared to hear each other out. However, it is never too late to wipe a slate clean and try to engage with something new. How about joining another society afresh and trying to meet a few more new people? Have you considered working part-time as a university student ambassador? This is also a really fun way of meeting others from different years and courses.

You sound like a very driven person who is results-focused and comfortable with leadership - have you ever considered trying to get a few friends together and forming a new society based on something you are interested in? This will also be a good way to practice transferrable skills such as project management, leadership and team work which will help prepare you for your next steps.

I hope some of this helps - good luck with your next steps 🙂
