advice for uni applications 2026/27 entry

I'm going to be applying to do a triple language degree (French, Spanish, and Chinese) for 2026/27 entry. I study French Spanish and 3D design predicted for an ABB (A in French)

Thus far, I've done volunteer language teaching and a related essay competition. I try to engage with the languages as much as I can as well like watching films and reading books. Is there anything else I should consider and that

I'm applying to the following
St Andrews
Bangor
Liverpool
Newcastle
Southampton

Hi @Cherryangel ,

Well done on figuring out what you want to study at university - it is a very big decision!

So far, I can see that you have put in great commitment to your chosen course. Volunteering is excellent, and i think what universities are really looking for in applicants is clear passion and dedication both within and beyond the curriculum, which your grades and extracurriculars display!

I think with the personal statement, perhaps, try to explain the origins of your interest in the languages and then go on to talk about how you have then engaged with them, highlighting your true interest in them, and hence, your desire to study them in more detail at university. Also, maybe try and talk a little about your non-language related interests/hobbies/extracurriculars to show yourself as a rounded individual, and this might also give you a chance to suggest what else you might bring to the table as a university student and member of that community. This might be other work experience/volunteering/competitions and awards. Really take the chance to show yourself off and prove why the university should want to offer you a place.

I hope this was all helpful and you get the offers you want! ☺️

Hi Cherryangel,

Wow it’s amazing to see how passionate you are about languages! 🌍✨ I totally agree with everything the Southampton rep said you're clearly on the right track, and it’s fantastic that you’re already doing things like volunteering, entering competitions, and engaging with films and books in your chosen languages. That’s exactly the kind of initiative that helps you stand out.

If you're looking to build your skills even further, one fun way I’ve found helpful is listening to music in other languages lyrics can teach you a lot without it feeling like study! 🎶 Personally, I speak two languages and have (so far!) failed at learning a third, but it’s something I still keep coming back to. Have you ever come across a book called Fluent in 3 Months by Benny Lewis? It’s full of practical tips and motivation for language learning definitely worth a read!

If you end up choosing Bangor, you might be interested in our Languages for All programme (this link give you details for registering for this year - but it still gives you an idea of what's on offer). It offers free language classes across a range of modern languages, which is a brilliant opportunity to explore new ones or improve the ones you already know.

Bangor also has a really welcoming community of language lovers! One of the most popular societies is LangSoc (Language and Culture Society), which brings together students from all kinds of language backgrounds whether it’s your degree subject or just a hobby. 🌏 Their events include language tandems (where you can practise with others), cultural celebrations, and more. Some of the languages regularly spoken in the group include Japanese, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Romanian, Urdu, and Malayalam but all languages are welcome! 🗣️🎉

There are also loads of international societies at Bangor you can check them out here: 👉 Undeb Bangor Societies

Best of luck with your application and more importantly, enjoy the journey! If you love what you're doing, you’re already on your way to great things. If you have any questions about the application process or open days, feel free to reach out!

Ffi 😊
