Hi Cheemgles,
Sorry to hear about the issues you are facing with your maintenance loan. I was in a very similar position myself during my first year, as I received the minimum maintenance loan which didn’t cover my rent (let alone expenses). I also did not receive financial help from my parents due to their other personal expenses.
First thing I would recommend is contacting your university to see if they have a hardship fund. At my university, LJMU, the hardship fund is essentially a pot of money which students can apply for to help them through financial difficulties. This money does not need paying back. The average claim last year was £716 for students who were approved. Whilst not a permanent solution, it can be a big help.
Secondly I would look up if your university has a UNITEMPS department. The UNITEMP department at my university helped me find a job immediately when I joined university. This really helped me financial support myself through my studies. UNITEMPS also pay the living wage, which you don’t often get with part time student jobs.
Lastly, I would see if you are entitled to any bursaries or DSA. You can contact your university Student Advice and Wellbeing team and I imagine they would be able to assist with this.
Hope this helps a little bit!
Tilly
