SFE financial hardship

I have submitted the forms to prove financial hardship as they were trying to deduct an overpayment from last year however last year the amount I received wasn’t even enough for my rent, putting me in thousands of pounds in debt and now they say i am entitled to less than half this amount. My entitled amount has gone down because my parent’s income increased since last year however they still can’t afford to help me out, and I’m not entitled to any funding or bursaries because of their income. What can i do? I can barely afford my rent this year. Does anyone know if i can possibly get more maintenance loan? I am under 25, not estranged from my parents or a care leaver, have no disabilities and don’t have any dependants or caring responsibilities so cannot go this route. Thank you

Hi there. If you do not fall under the eligibility to apply as an independent student (over 25, care leaver, estranged etc) then will will require your parental details in order for you to apply for the higher rate of Maintenance Loan.

How long have you been supporting yourself financially and when did your course begin? Thanks, Leah.

Hello, my course began in 2024, and I have been supporting myself since then. My parents are able to give me 30£ per week to help with food costs but not with rent.

Thanks, submitting the Hardship form sounds like the best option in your case: if the team agree, they'll defer the overpayment to the next academic year.

The team are currently processing applications in 17 working days, so please check your account and e-mails for any updates.

Thanks, Graeme
