Need help / support between now and September

So im 19, going into first year in September (previously had been in uni and had to start fresh).

I'm estranged and living alone, I have a grand total of £160 to last me till student finance comes in on the 22nd Sept. Thing is I'm trans so have a lot of additional expenses as well. That £160 has to cover food, phone bill, medication and medical payments. I only have to pay for 1 does of medication and 1 medical payment in the time frame but they alone come to £100.

I can't get a student bank account as I've no documentation in my name that matches uni / ucas so no banks will let me open one. Only a few even will with having no credit score.

I've spoken to the uni I'm going to in Sept and they said there's nothing they can do to help. At best if I speak to the accommodation team they might be able to skip the £250 deposit. But even that isn't much help in the grand scheme of things as currently I don't even see myself making it to September.

Does anyone know kf any resources or anything for someone in my situation? Any help or suggestions at all are greatly appreciated.

If your medication comes on an NHS prescription, have you looked into your eligibility for free prescriptions -- it's possible to claim on the basis of low income; see https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-low-income-scheme

I can't get a student bank account as I've no documentation in my name that matches uni / ucas so no banks will let me open one.

Not having documentation that matches the name your university and UCAS are using might cause you problems. Some universities require that you produce photo ID when you register. If you don't have any that matches the name they have then they might not let you register.

Is there a particular reason why you've applied for university in a different name to the one your documentation has? And if you're changing your name, have you not done this via deed poll or another official route? This would tie your new name to your existing name.

Only a few even will with having no credit score.

I suspect most students don't have a credit score when they open a student bank account.

Hey, I assume you are paying private for your HRT prescription. Have you discussed shared care with your GP? Have you asked if your local GP/Hospital will cover routine blood tests? They might say no, but it's still worth asking around.

Did you have a change of name recently? Is that why your UCAS etc doesn't match? If you have a deedpoll you can request a license in your new name from DVLA (provisional if you haven't passed your test) - they might charge you but the standard charge will be no more than £34 and that should enable you to open a student bank account.

Access your local services like food banks etc. That's what they're there for. If you can get some part-time work, great - but I appreciate it can be really tough.

You have an exit plan - it's going to be ok. Feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you for the thorough reply! The NHS won't cover my prescription sadly. I changed my name via unenrolled deedpoll which was accepted by ucas and the uni, the banks refuse to accept kt tho. I assumed the same regarding the credit score for banks and they all told me that's the only reason the websites won't offer it to me. And unfortunately not, due to my autism I cab bearly look agter myself let alone work. My track record isn't helping in regard to it even if I could.

Hii, thanks for the reply, the gp refused until a 6 month check in with the endo unfortunately. And while I've paid the last if my money to update my ID it's gonna take 6-8 weeks to come back which is way too late to help cover food or deposit or anything.

Being able to get shared care at all is still a win here - It just sucks that you're still in a difficult situation for the time being. I hope you have friends that are able to support you.

At this point, it might be worth contacting the university again about this, to see if they will push back/waive the deposit fee for accommodation, since that will be a major expense off your mind for now.

It might also be worth reaching out to local civic support (usually organised by your local council, the council website may have some information) to see if they have any advice.

It's true that your credit score shouldn't affect your ability to open a student back account. They should accept an unenrolled deedpoll (but I am unsurprised they didn't ....) Have you spoken to someone in person in a branch or have you just been trying to resolve the student bank account situation online? It might be worth taking your deedpoll, letter of entry to university, etc. and just trying to get someone's time in person in a branch since they're more likely to be sympathetic to your situation if you're there in front of them.

I agree with the shared care, it dosent get rid of the endo sub but it should reduce hrt to £18 for 3 months!!!

I tried speaking to the uni again today via email and in person and they didn't reply via email and said nothing they can do in person since I'm not a student there till Sept.

For the student bank account I've tried in person and calling up. They either said they'd not take the deedpoll saying it wasn't official enough and had to be the enrolled one. The ones that wouldn't offer me a student account said idk must be your credit score nothing we can do.

Its all so annoying.

Sounds super frustrating. Is your accommodation owned by the university or is a private provider? Have you spoken to them?

I genuinely believe sometimes deedpolls are accepted based on how nice the stationary is, it's so ridiculous.
Have you looked at your credit score? You can check for free on sites like Experion.
Hey @Sylvieon906, how are you holding up?
