Law at Exeter University

I'm really interested in studying either the Law LLB or the Law with French Law course at Exeter University- it would be really helpful if someone could give me some insight into what these courses are like :smile:

Hi!

Thank you for your question, I studied Law at undergrad and started off with English and French Law so can give you lots of insight into the courses! Generally, there is no LNAT requirement and we also don't have any subject specific requirements so the application process is a lot less pressure than you'd think!

For both courses, you'll spend your 1st and 2nd year doing compulsory modules in line with the modules required to qualify as a solicitor or barrister such as Legal Foundations, Contract Law, etc. However, with French Law, you'll be doing your French Law modules in place of one of the English Law ones (for me it was Criminal Law that was replaced by French Constitutional Law). In your 2nd year, you can pick one optional module in your second term.

With Law, you can extend your study by a year doing a paid work placement, which is great for your CV and personal development! Some students even secure jobs for after university so it's a great way for you to get your foot in the door! In your final year, all of your modules are optional, including the dissertation! You can pick anything tailored to an interest you have, a career path you want to go down or even if you prefer coursework over exams!

With the French Law pathway, you'll be doing 3rd year in Exeter, where you'll pick up the required modules substituted in 1st and 2nd year, alongside French Contract Law and an optional module. In 4th year, you'll spend your time in Rennes where you'll complete one of the Master 1 courses! At the end of your degree, you'll not only have your English Law qualification but you'll also have your French Law qualification.

Both courses offer great opportunities for you, both within the degree and after you finish the degree as well! Our graduates were ranked in the top 10 most sought after by employers, highlighting the evergrowing successes of our alumni! Our Careers Zone is also dedicated to helping you with applying for jobs, whether that's with your CV, interview tips, hosting networking events, etc. Additionally, I would recommend joining the Law Society as you'll meet other Law students and get involved with lots of activities such as networking dinners, moot courts and mock trials!

I hope this has given you a bit of insight in terms of what you can expect if you choose to study at Exeter! If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

I've also linked the course pages - if you go to our 'Course Content' section, you can find out more about modules in detail:

Hi Anonymous#1

Do check out our after you apply webpage for a bit more information but form this page we state;

"If you firmly accept our conditional offer but are unable to satisfy the terms exactly, we will reconsider our offer in August in the light of your actual performance and the performance of others seeking entry to the same programme. However, you should be aware that we can make no guarantee that it will be possible to accept you if you do not meet the conditions exactly."

There will be a lot of factors admissions take into account as to whether we can soften our offer when we receive confirmed results. It generally relates to the strength of the applicant cohort on results day and popularity of the course. For many offers this year we guaranteed to soften by one grade (with some exceptions ie specific subject requirements) if the offer was firmly accepted this information was emailed to the eligible offer holders.

Hope that helps
