Medicine application 2026

Hello,
I am a year 12 student and I have recenetly recieved back my mock exam results. I got ABC. Of course this is very bad for a medicine application but I am predicted A*AA for my UCAS application which is very aspirational, and I don't know if it will be achievable.

Does anyone have any advice for what I should do, I would say if I was to take a gap year and do the UCAT after my A Levels, allowing me to work really hard over the summer in order to get back on track for very good A levels. I am also aiming for a high UCAT score as I want to be able to apply for competetive unis such as Kings College London, and UCL.

I want to know if it is doable for me to apply this year, as I would much prefer being able to do that. And how do you manage UCAT and A level revision over the summer holiday???!

For a start, you will be applying to uni with your predicted grades, so apart from your UCAS teacher at school, it is extremely unlikely any med school will get to see your actual mock results. Your predicted is what your teachers at school believed you are likely to achieved in yr 13, so there is nothing to be overly concerned at this stage. Yr 12 is very different from GCSE - it took me around 3-3.5months to adjust to it previously while I was in yr 12. Work on it during summer and you are likely to see a difference come Sept - its totally doable.

UCAT - when is your UCAT scheduled?

Gap year - are you able to get disciplined revision in your 3 subjects, assuming they are Chem, Bio and Maths? Apart from revision, divide and conquer the subjects during summer while working on your UCAT.

Competitive med schools - all med schools are competitive for a start. While KCL looked at and scored your GCSE heavily together with UCAT, UCL looked solely at your UCAT.

How one manages - its mostly down to individual discipline I would say. At least for me since last summer going through the dreaded UCAT!

UCAT is booked for the 5th September, 7 Weeks away.

I’d say I can definitely do disciplined revision over the summer, I just don’t know how I can work very very hard to improve my grades and also work very very hard on the UCAT.

My GCSEs are 9887666553, obviously not very good applying for medicine however I have spoken to some universities and due to contextual factors at the time of my GCSEs happening, the university won’t weigh them heavily at all as long as I get doctors to write up the evidence.

I think the panic comes from not knowing how I can structure all of this

There are other med schools that you still can apply to provided you have a good UCAT score.

It is best you avoid applying to these med schools that score GCSE: Oxford, King's College London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Cardiff, Leicester, Nottingham, KMMS, Aston, Queen's Belfast, Leeds, Edinburgh - these med schools either weighs GCSE (x %, eg KCL no one knows for sure what's GCSE weightage) or weighs GCSE heavily (up to 50% for academic and 50% UCAT, eg Oxford, Newcastle) for interview selection.

Hiya, firstly ABC in Year 12 mocks isn’t an application ending result. Lots of people improve massively between their mocks and real A-levels (especially with a structured plan), and if your teachers are predicting A*AA, that means they believe you're capable of getting it

Here’s what I’d suggest:

Focus lots on the UCAT over summer - smashing your UCAT will help massively, especially for medical schools that weigh it heavily.

After the UCAT, you can shift to doing A-level consolidation, bringing you up to speed with the things you may have struggled with in year 12, and setting you up for a successful year 13

I was in a similar situatuion in year 12, and I remember how overwhelming it all felt. I've just finished my first year of medicine so there really is enough time for you to put together a strong application

Just know that it’s 100% still possible. You’ve got time and options so don't give up on applying!

If you’d like 1:1 help with UCAT, personal statement, or mock interviews, I run personalised support sessions and offer resources for students applying for medicine. Feel free to drop me a message me if that would be of interest.

Thank you for your encouragement for OP.!

Think your last second paragraph broke TSR rules of adverts and self-promoting biz, you might wish to edit and delete the last second paragraph.

Okay thank you so much, however my UCAT exam has been booked for right at the end of my summer?

Take things one step at a time. The most important thin you need to nail now is UCAT. Worry about the academic when term starts, there is time.
