Any Yr 10s here who think they "failed" their end-of-year mocks?

Failure is definitely subjective. But it's not really a bad thing, especially if recognised early (so it can then be corrected before it really counts).

We're curious to hear how you did versus what you were hoping for. Happy to provide any specific tips/answers for Maths and the Sciences too.

English Language 6
French 6
Physics 7
Biology 7
Computer Science 4
History 6
RS 8
Was a little disappointed as I am aiming for 7s, 8s and 9s but there is time to improve...

Exactly, there is still time to improve! Now's the time to start taking corrective action - nothing crazy over the holidays as you need to recharge before Y11 too, but small and consistent.

Definitely focus the most on English and CS as those are weakest. It seems like there's also a bit of a theme: essay writing - build this skill by applying what you do well in RS to the other essay subjects.

Now, let's hone in on STEM (since that's where our expertise mainly lie)...
What do you think happened with CS? Mainly a knowledge, exam skills or programming thing, do you think?

Sciences look good - working on past papers and exam technique will be the main thing to give these a boost. Not your priority though if you're happy with these - just keep working consistently in the background to maintain these then.

For Maths, there's two main boats students are in that hold them back: knowledge gaps, or applying the knowledge they do have in creative ways to higher order application questions. Where would you say you lie on this spectrum right now?

Also, do you feel these mocks generally line up with how you've been doing until now? If not, why? What was different in these mocks?

Hi, I wouldn’t worry too much, as you said, still time to improve. My Y10 grades weren’t that good (various issues) , but I managed to redeem my grades in Year 11.

I’ll give you tips on the subjects you’re struggling on first:

For English literature, I would highly recommend Mr Salles English YouTube. His videos cover context of texts, (e.g victorian behaviour and beliefs in Jekyll and Hyde) which is something worth including for the 7-9 bracket. PMT also has useful notes on context of texts. Try aim for at least 3 mentions (doesn’t need to be paragraphs) of context of texts and weave it into your writing. You’ll get better at this with practice, so make sure you write as many essays as possible!

For computer science, I would recommend the CGP workbooks to practice pseudo code (even if your exam is online, if it is I would recommend trying out your own projects in repl.it). If theory is the issue then I would recommend perhaps making flashcards or using online platforms like BBC Bitesize and Seneca.

For history, If you do edexcel textbooks I would recommend Hodder textbooks. I self-studied history so honestly it was a challenge but I feel that practicing essays and regularly checking them over with your teacher is helpful. Also Seneca website for fact learning and active recall. Practice sources evaluation in particular if that’s something you struggle with

For maths, I would recommend you ‘scaffold’ by first practicing textbook questions and homework, then move on to exam style questions e.g on maths genie. Also Corbett Maths 5 a day is very good for ensuring your brain stays in the maths zone!

I got an average of 6-7's when I was aiming for 8's. I'm trying to get into A-levels at a school with lots of competition so I should be getting 7-8's.
I know I still have a year, but in a year I will be doing double the amount of exams. 😭
I'm getting kinda stressed out about the amount of content I need to cover for my GCSE's. Especially since the exams seemed really easy but my marks sucked? In particular, I did loads of work for science and I thought I did pretty good but my score suggests otherwise.

Probably suggest focusing again more on essay subject skills for History and Business. Any particular Science which you're struggling more with? A bit of practice work should be able to help with Maths. Very well done for English!

Ah. Maybe you can find a second school to cover these other subjects? Also consider if you have enough time to squeeze in some more courses in only one (very busy) year.

We really feel the frustration and worry. Quite a few things to unpack here...

Firstly, content can feel overwhelming going into Y11 when you still see stuff left. Generally schools will finish content by around Easter of Y11 if not earlier, but the honest truth is sometimes they don't - or worse, they rush and tell their students everything has been covered, but not properly. Protect yourself by taking stock now - how much exactly is left to cover in each subject and does that seem doable? Start teaching yourself where the answer is no.

Your personal targets are quite reasonable in the time you have (and could even ve exceeded). Everyone feels a little worried going into Y11, but only because there's an anticipation of the negative because you feel unprepared. Complete some actions now to feel more prepared and you'll start to be less worried (and perhaps even a bit excited).

You may have more exams, but that doesn't mean more stress. Learn and become better, then the exam is just a measurement. Measure once or thrice, it shouldn't be any additional burden if done correctly.

Lastly, if "exams seemed easy, but marked sucked", then that suggests deeper issues with the way you're learning (e.g. just memorising rather than understanding). Do you think this at least might apply? Just say if so and we would be happy to provide some guidance.

Yeah definitely. I struggle more with chemistry, like grasping the concepts.
That would be a bit too expensive lol, I've picked out subjects that i'll find easy. I've done sociology in the past with this school but they took it off this year for some reason which i am really disappointed about and I'm going to do Islam for RS which should be easy as I'm already Muslim and take Islamic Studies at school.

Thank you, this is some great advice!
I'll have a look at what is left of my courses and what I can do at home.
I think my marks were low because of my exam technique. I will try to practice more exam questions, but do you know if there is any other way to improve exam technique?

Ok, perfect. Sounds like you've already considered the additional workload well - seems manageable from what you've shared. Good luck!

Thank you - happy to hear you found it helpful.

Summer is a perfect time to take stock of how much content is left. Check again over Christmas (around Y11 mock time basically) - you can also assess how your self-study has been going too. Spreadsheet of topic for each subject is probably one of the easiest ways.

Ultimately, exam technique is all about the way you approach the specific exam, rather than the more general knowledge you gain (the truly valuable bit). Exposure to specific questions from your exam board and learning what the mark scheme wants (i.e. exam practice) is the only real way to improve this.

Whilst a difference of one grade is probably based on exam technique, take some time to honestly reflect. Look over recent tests and mark schemes and ask, "Did I get the gist or does the answer only seem obvious now I've seen it?" Since you're not near maxing out most subjects (8/9s), you can also improve your grades just by increasing the depth of your knowledge and the skill of learning itself. We would suggest working on both sides simultaneously for best results: keep working on content in (and out, where necessary) of school (knowledge), and exam practice (exam technique).
