Physics or Mechanical Engineering?

Im currently in year 12, this whole year ive been thinking of applying for Mechanical engineering. Last week i had wokr experience at an engineering firm and now im having doubts and thinking maybe i should switch to a physics course. However, majority of my extracurriculars are based on engineering and im scared i wont have a competitive application for top unis if i change courses now. Any advice?

Have you been to any uni open days for either subject and attended the subject talks?

You don't need any work-experience for either a Mech Eng or Physics degree.

Btw, did you realise that there are degree courses that include both :
Engineering Physics BSc | Undergraduate study | Loughborough University
Natural Sciences - Lancaster University
etc

yes ive attended a subject masterclass for engineering and a talk on particle physics as well as some online courses to get a taste of both

Hey! 😊

It’s completely normal to feel unsure at this stage. Work experience can be really eye-opening, and it's great that you're reflecting on what truly interests you.

If you’re leaning more towards Physics now, it’s definitely not too late to change your mind. Many skills and interests overlap between Physics and Mechanical Engineering, and your extracurriculars still show strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and initiative, all of which are super relevant to Physics too.

When it comes to personal statements, universities know your interests can evolve, especially in Year 12. You can still write a strong statement by focusing on the skills you've developed and explaining what sparked your interest in Physics. Mentioning the work experience and how it helped you realise what you're most passionate about can actually make your application more thoughtful and self-aware.

I’d also really recommend attending open days, they’re one of the best ways to get a real feel for each course. Speak to current students and professors, ask about the course content, and what people go on to do after graduating. Sometimes, even one conversation can make things clearer.

You’ve got time to explore, and asking these questions now puts you in a strong position to make a well-informed choice. Goodluck! 😊

Hi there,

We understand that deciding on a course can be daunting, especially when faced with two different fields like engineering and physics. It's great that you’re taking the time to reflect on your recent work experience and your future plans 🙂

It might be worth having a look at our Physics course here. You can also email our department [email protected] for some advice and guidance from our Admissions team.

You may wish to research the potential career paths and industries where physics graduates thrive.
Some of our recent graduates are working as physicists, aeronautical engineers, science and engineering technicians, scientific researchers, technical sales, finance and investment analysts, management consultants, software designers and engineers, to name just a few.

Remember, it's completely normal to have doubts and uncertainties. If you have any other questions, do reach out.

Good luck!
