failing my course

I'm a PA student, I've passed all my exams. The problem is I had gastroenteritis which I caught from a patient on placement and had to miss two days of university week a few months ago. My university takes attendance and I submitted an absence form stating all of this and my university still put it through for additional considerations, It got rejected because I submitted the form late.

The problem is for the additional considerations, I didn't know how to go about it as it and contacted my department, they were no help. This was also around exam time and I was trying to revise instead of dealing with this ****. A girl from my class then showed me where you find the form.

I think considering I even had a discharge summary from A&E ad submitted an absence form on the day of both my absences putting it through to additional considerations was stupid. If I went in then others in my class would ahve become unwell

What do I do now?

You have missed two days of your course?

This is a non-issue.

Thanks. that's what I'm saying, considering your not even allowed to go in when you have symptoms as it may pass on to others. I submitted the coursework itself on time.

Hi there,

It sounds like you did the right and responsible thing so I would not worry. Most unis nowadays have online resources and/or lecture recordings available to students to help you catch up if you ever have to miss anything - see if there's anything like this available to you.

I had a friend who had to miss a couple of uni days due to illness and she ended up still doing extremely well. And so as long as you submit things on time and catch up on what you've missed I'm sure you will be fine!

I hope this helps 🙂

Thank you so much for replying. They are going to fail me because of these absences even though I passed all my exams and handed in my coursework in time. As healthcare professionals they should know your not allowed to come in with diarrhoea and vomiting

That does seem a little excessive and very unfair and I'm sorry to hear you've been put through this. Is your personal tutor aware of this? Is there any way they can support you or guide you on what to do next?

Not a lot of this makes sense I'm afraid. You wouldn't be in danger of failing the course unless your attendance was poor.

No, my attendance has been fine on placement, every term we have university contact weeks, and because I missed just two days my attendance has gone down, I haven't missed any other days at all. It was just those two days

My department and head of course are aware, they have not been helpful at all, they just said to go through student advice

I still don't think we have proper a grasp of the facts here to be able to advise. Attendance on any course relating to healthcare is not an issue they handle lightly.

If you missed the deadline then you’re now in the realms of needing discretionary action to reconsider your case.

But tbh, if you reached out to the university before the deadline and didnt receive a response or a confusing one, and you have medical records I think you are in a very strong position for reconsideration, I strongly recommend you engage your students union & your tutor and gather all evidence and make a clear picture how you were misled by university communications.

It’s still going to be discretionary but hopefully this would help. Is your tutor on your side? Get them to support you with your next steps if they are.

Get your evidence, make a clear story & go speak to the students union. What will be important is the clear facts & the exact reasons why you didn’t apply for the extenuating circumstances, and the university will probably have a default position of follow the regulations, and what is written in the student handbook.

It is worth reviewing the regulations in the handbook & checking they clearly define the rules and where to find the information, because you didn’t adhere to the universities rules (for fair or unfair reasons) it’s vital you take hold of the narrative but deal in facts & evidence.

Ultimately if the course director is not providing suitable responses in a reasonable time frame, just document all of this and take it with you to the SU.

Hi,

That sounds really frustrating, and honestly, it makes sense that you were focused on revising during exam season instead of navigating a confusing and poorly explained process.

Unfortunately, universities can be very procedural, and missing a formal deadline, can lead to rejections unless there's an appeal process. Here’s what I’d suggest:
1. Appeal the decision (if possible)
Most universities have an appeals process for rejected additional consideration requests. Your argument is strong:

You submitted an absence form on time with medical evidence.

You were unwell and following infection control advice.

You were trying to get support but didn't receive adequate guidance.

You were not aware of the procedure due to lack of clarity and were focusing on your exams.

If an appeal is still possible, base it on procedural unfairness (lack of clear guidance/support) and mitigating circumstances (you were seriously ill and prevented a wider outbreak).
2. Speak to your personal tutor or course lead
Explain everything calmly and clearly. Ask if they can advocate on your behalf, sometimes departments can push back or support an appeal even if it's late.
3. Put it in writing
Write a formal email summarising everything that happened, dates, actions you took, who you contacted, when you found the form, etc. This helps create a clear paper trail and shows you acted in good faith.

Hope this helps,
Danish
