Hi! It’s great to hear you’re passionate about History and Politics, and that you’re already thinking about work experience in Year 12.

Here are a few suggestions for things you could explore over the summer:

Local MP’s Office or Council Try contacting your local MP or councillor to see if you can shadow them, help with admin or campaigning, or even just visit their office.

Museums or Heritage Sites Many offer short volunteer placements that are great for gaining history-related experience.

Libraries or Archives Local libraries or archives often welcome volunteers to help with cataloguing or community projects.

University Taster Days or Summer Schools Some universities run free sessions in History or Politics, which look great on your CV and personal statement.

Online Courses Platforms like Springpod offer short courses that show initiative and subject interest.

Volunteering Even general volunteering, like in a charity shop, helps build useful skills such as communication, teamwork and organisation.

Don’t worry if you don’t find a formal placement straight away, anything that shows enthusiasm will help build your CV.

You don't need any work-experience for a degree course in either Politics or History - these are academic courses. Unis will not be interested in 'relevant' w/exp, because they know it wont make you a better undergraduate student, in any subject.

One of my ex-students did 5 days w/ex at a local World Heritage site - she spent all that time handing out audio-guides and explaining how they worked to foreign visitors, who often didn't speak English. She learnt nothing about history - but heaps about self-confidence, communication and hospitality, which was actually far more valuable.

Thanks for the advice, every little helps I guess and I was hoping to get active during the summer I guess so your right about the self-confidence thing which is a main reason as to why I am interested. Secondly, one of your 'ex-students' are you a Politics teacher by any chance (sorry to be nosy)?

Hi, do you know what career you'd like to go into? That might help shape what experience you should get, for example working at a museum or the local council. I would approach places like these and ask to do some volunteering, perhaps doing some research on a specific topic for them? This would get you some research skills.

I will say that any experience is good experience, even if that's working in hospitality or retail, because it shows you have soft skills like teamwork and communication which graduate employers often look for. Another option might be getting involved with any clubs or extra-curricular activities at school that you can put on your CV as well.

The biggest thing for me was getting confidence in the workplace so I would go for any job you can find. Perhaps try Facebook, Indeed and LinkedIn to see if there are any opportunities available as well as reaching out to local organisations using a cover letter.

Best of luck!
