Studying with previous overpayment debt

Hi all,

neither me nor my development worker/advocate can really find the answer to this anywhere so I thought I would try here. I just am looking for some information for when I am one day well enough to try and get back into something

some years ago ( i think around 2018ish now as it was around when i was last able to work, I tried to study a course at my local university but had to stop due to disability, I subsequently got an overpayment I had to pay back but because of my health it has been on hold ever since, and still is for another few years at least. Unfortunately my health has only gotten worse too but I really want to know how it works if I am ever in a position to go back and study with the overpayment?

I would be looking at ideally something like an OU course part time so it is as flexible as possible as I will be disabled for the rest of my life but I do hope one day to be in a position to at least be able to do more.

Would the balance have to be cleared for that to happen if the time came? or at least have payments being made on it? is it reviewed on a case by case basis?

Hi there. You can still apply for funding with outstanding overpayments.

If you have any bad debt, such as overpayments that have been carried over to debt collectors, then this can affect your eligibility. Thanks, Leah.
