I will be honest with you it doesn't matter what university you do your nursing degree at as long as you qualify at the end of the three years as a registered nurse, the main thing is that your future employers only interested in you having completed a approved credited course which you'll be doing with NHS Via the university.

Hello!

I can tell you a little bit about our nursing course, and perhaps a Uni of York ambassador will come on and then you can compare us this way!

On our campus, we have two large nursing wards (6/8 beds each) where our students spend most of their time. We also have a few consultation rooms on the same floor and a flat downstars, where our nurses can engage in simulations such as home visits with paid actors working as patients. We aleo own several high-tech practice dummies - they blink, breathe, bleed, urinate, everything! And our technicians can speak through the dummy from the next room as though you were speaking with a real patient, with cameras and microphones on each ward (so when you’re being assessed, there’s no lecturer standing over your shoulder - just you and the “patient”).

We have a huge range of health courses that all work very closely together, and this year we are introducing some new health courses such as Midwifery and Operational Department Practice, and of course we have many existing courses such as Paramedic Science and Physiotherapy. Our practical classes can be as small as around 10 people, so our subjects often work closely together and ensure a familiarity about the importance of other roles in the hospital so you’re able to help the wards run smoothly.

If you have any more specific asks (such as info about placements or timetables) I’ll be more than happy to email our Nursing team to answer any of your questions. Overall, the nursing courses are quite standardised across universities so no matter where you go you will always be a qualified nurse in the end! So, in terms of choosing a university, I’d highly suggest going to some Open Days and having a look around to get a good feel for the place - we have an open day coming up on Saturday 16th of August - linked here: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/meet-us/open-days/

I’d also suggest coming to visit universities during term time, so you can see how the university would look realistically on a day-to-day basis, not just on an Open Day when they’re at their best. We offer personal campus tours for prospective students tailored to which course you’re interested in, where an ambassador can take you around our health block and our wards, and maybe even speak to an academic; linked here: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/meet-us/campus-tours/

Although, if you have applied to YSJ and get invited to an interview day, you will get an all-round campus tour from one of our ambassadors, and an in-depth facilities tour and Q&A with one of our academics. Hope to see you there!

Best,
Alex

Hi!

I didn't study Nursing at York, but I am a grad - so if you have any questions about student life, accommodation etc, just let me know!

We have some blogs written by our Nursing students which might be useful for you:

I hope this helps! If you like, I can get in contact with a current student to answer any of your questions 🙂

Exactly this! One other factor which might help, is if you are planning to live in halls, some universities group nursing students with housemates on the same course/very similar to help with travel, being on similar schedules etc. Some students prefer this, whereas some would rather be with others from different courses so it's just a small detail which might be worth looking into 🙂
