DSA Laptops

Hey guys, so any current uni students willing to give me some advice on DSA laptops?
Like I'm well-versed in computer specs and stuff but because I am doing a stem degree I am not sure if the standard laptop options will meet the requirements for engineering or high level coding, especially for a 4 year course.

Any help is welcome.

I don't know what software Engineering requires because general practice programming is going to be fine any mid-spec laptop

SFE? Your course tech requirements won’t have any bearing on the spec of the laptop provided as it’s not a disability related need- it’s a course requirement . You’re not guaranteed a laptop via DSAs. It depends what assistive software you need. There’s only a handful of programs that need a mid spec computer which is where they might provide one.

SFW- you can get funding towards a course specific spec if your assessor can make the case for it. But you’ll need confirmation from the course leader of what is required for the course.

Hey!

I got the bog-standard Lenovo DSA laptop in my second year, and I unfortunately know literally nothing about laptops 😅. I take Psychology so I only needed one statistical software (SPSS), but later on I also downloaded Python as I was interested in learning some entry-level coding, and it held up pretty well for that.

If it’s something you’re concerned about, I’d maybe have a chat with whoever did your assessment for DSA and let them know the potential course requirements for your laptop. However, getting a better laptop might result in you having to pay more money towards it, so it can come down to what you can afford. It can also depend on what laptops their provider has in stock at the time.

If they can’t provide one that has everything you need, I’d email your course admin, a lecturer, or subject-specific librarian and make sure that the library computers have everything you need, and make sure that they will be easily accessible throughout your degree.

Good luck with everything!
Best,
