Sheffield Hallam Transfer To Medicine

Hi,
I am currently going into year 13. My dream has always been to study medicine but not getting the best grades at GCSE I have seen an option to do a foundation year in biomedical science at sheffield Hallam then transfer to the actual Sheffield russel group university. It says you have to get a minimum average score of 70% in all modules and a ukat score of 1790. I have a few questions if someone in this same field as me who are in university or who know about this could answer my question - much appreciated
When do I do my Ukat do I do it before I start the first year or can I do once I have finished the first year of foundation in biomedical sciences when applying for medicine?
How do Sheffield prioritise their applicants who apply for medicine from the foundation year. Do they mainly focus on your average score at the end of the year or mainly ukat?
How hard is it to get 70% in the first year?
How were the interview questions?
Thanks

Hello!

1.

so you can either do foundation biomed or just 1st year biomed

2.

you only need 70% overall on average, you don’t need 70% in every module

3.

you can do your ucat either before you start biomed or after you have completed your first year of biomed

4.

so for this scheme, sheffield don’t give you an interview based off ur ucat as you can even do the ucat after the interview- the only requirements are minimum 70%, 4 in maths and english language GCSE, and you need to meet at least 2 of the widening participation criteria’s. If you have all this you’re basically guaranteed an interview

5.

I am doing first year biomed and not foundation but I assume its pretty much the same in terms of achieving 70%, so for me there was a lot of work and assignments, but we only had one exam. I wouldn’t say it was hard to achieve 70% in terms of difficulty but maybe hard to achieve because of the workload because if you don’t keep on top of your work it can pile up, leading you to rush your assignments and not getting a good grade.

6.

My interview is next week, so I am unsure rn lol

No A levels aren’t looked at or considered

So as long as you meet the minimum requirements which is 1790 in ukat it all comes down to the interview
You’d likely just be better off applying directly to undergrad med but to unis that don’t use GCSE’s for a big part of their selection process.

Would you know which university
Thanks

Only do this if you’re completely fine with the idea of graduating from Sheffield Hallam as this is the stronger likelihood than actually winning one of these places.

I don’t but there is plenty of info in the med section of TSR. @GANFYD may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi I’m currently doing this and just had my interview today. It’s not as difficult as it seems to get 70% but of course this transfer is competitive. In terms of ucat it’s up to you. Personally I did mine literally after results last year it just means that I know that I’ve got my grade and that the only thing stopping me is my interview. In terms of the interview I would say it overall went well however I feel like I could have done a better job answering questions and I feel like I wanted to include things in my answers that I didn’t get a chance to. Has anyone else done theirs and if so how do they feel. I honestly don’t think I’m going to get an offer due to the competitive nature of the course but yet again I know some people haven’t done their ucat yet so maybe I might have a chance? Let me know if you have any questions I would be happy to help.

Also what I mean by results is my alevel results. So I did my ucat before stating the course. It’s entirely up to you when you do it. Because I did mine last year I also did the AR section. If you’re wondering what I got I got 2490 and b2. So pretty much average and if not considered a low score so honestly doesn’t matter what your score is as long as you meet the threshold they’ll invite you to interview
