The Student Room Group

I've just finished my undergrad at Kent! Ask me anything! :)

Hi,
I'm Josie and I have just finished my final year at Kent!😊

I studied BSc Social Sciences and am happy to answer any questions and share my experiences!

Beginning university is super exciting, but I also understand how hard it is to choose the right university for you, the stressful lead up to results day, and the list of things you might have to do to prepare for university. But I've been there! So let me know if you have any questions about:

- What to do and expect on results day
- Clearing
- What a day in the life of a Kent student is like
- What can I do to prepare for university
- What pencil case or uni bag essentials might I need
- What to look for when researching different universities if I'm just starting out
- What extracurriculars, societies, or part-time work opportunities are available at Kent
- What is Canterbury or Medway Campus like

We are going to be creating some thread over the coming weeks to help students prepare for results day and starting university too, so let us know if you would like to see any specific posts😊

Best of luck for results day in advance, enjoy the sunshine in the meantime😊🦋🌅!
Best wishes,
Uni of Kent Student Reps!🎓️

Did you join any societies and if so, what was your favourite part about them?

Hi!
I hope you are well!😊

Yes I have! I have been part of the Netball team🏃during my three years at the Medway Campus. The team was combined with students from Greenwich and Canterbury Christchurch university (as we share a campus at Medway) which I loved because I got to meet some lovely girls from all different courses!😊

My favourite part was definitely meeting every week for training and playing in matches too. It was a nice break in the evening from my studies, and it got me moving and laughing with my friends so this was something I really enjoyed!😊

If you are studying at Medway campus this September I would definitely recommend looking at the great societies available! You can look through them here. And of course, students from Medway campus can get involved with the societies at Canterbury campus too (and vice versa). I'm starting my masters at Kent this September and I'm really looking forward to my studies and getting involved in some of the societies at Canterbury too! I love sports so I might try out something different this time, perhaps badminton! 🏸😊

Best wishes,
Josie

I saw a TikTok from someone who said Darwin College is the worst student accommodation in England. Can anyone give their experience?

Hi,
I hope you are well!😊

Thank you for your question. I commute to campus so I do not have any experience of living in student accommodation, however, I have got in touch with the accommodation team for you. They have said that Darwin College accommodation is of a good standard and is only a short walk from the centre of campus. You can see pictures and take a virtual tour around the rooms here. Each flat is shared between 5 students, who will also share toilet and shower facilities. A spacious communal kitchen is shared between 10 flatmates. The accommodation provides students with lots of opportunities to meet new people and socialise, and is located in a a great place on campus- near to where everything is happening! 🙂

For any worries, concerns, or queries, you are welcome to contact the accommodation team:
I hope this helps! 😊
Best wishes,
Josie

hi! i had friends in darwin and while it wasn’t super modern and 5 star hotel level it was nice & liveable!!
it probably gets this rating as it is shared bathroom/toilet and the kitchens are shared between 10 people & are across the hall from the dorms. all in all they’re decent, not anything to write home about but they do the job.
the main things i can think of is that the walls are a bit thin and the beds roll away from the wall in some cases but there are ways of fixing those things.
all in all, don’t worry about it too much as it’s better than alot of student accommodation (especially Eliot) and is very liveable!

My YP has ADHD. Are student services helpful for this and do you have any particular recommendations of what they should be doing before arrving in September? They have DSA in place.

Hi,
I hope you are both well!😊

We would love you to pass on our congratulations to your young person for securing their place at Kent!👏
What will they be studying?🎓️

I have loved my time here, and have enjoyed it so much that I am staying on for my masters this September! So if you have any questions about the part-time work opportunities, societies, or the extracurriculars available to students, then let me know!🙂

It's great to hear that your young person has DSA in place, and it's a great idea to get their support in place before they start their studies.

The Student Support and Wellbeing (SSW) team is responsible for students wellbeing and support during their studies. If you haven't registered with them yet, then this is the first step to getting support set up🙂 You can register with the team here, and there is a useful video which walks you through the process here. If you get stuck or need any help, then you can email the SSW team ([email protected]) or call them (01227 823158, Monday to Friday 9:00 - 5:00).

While I do not have ADHD, I have a rheumatoid arthritis which can affect my mobility if I have a flare up. Before starting my studies I registered with Student Support and Wellbeing and had a meeting with them to set up an ILP (Inclusive Learning Plan) which includes information about my condition and any support I might need during my studies. This plan was available for my lecturers and staff to view too. While I do not have any experience with ADHD support, the team were super helpful with getting everything sorted for me, and have been there during my studies when I have needed them. Even for a chat when I felt a bit overwhelmed during the exam period🙂 The team were so approachable and friendly, and happy to have a chat and talk you through any support they had available for you.

I hope this helps! 🙂
Let us know if you have any questions!

Best wishes,
Josie
