Law with French law - choosing a uni

Hi guys,

I want to do law with French law at university, and I have chosen 4 unis so far: Oxford, kcl, ucl, Warwick. Warwick will be my backup (law with French as opposed to French law) and the rest aspirational. What would be the best 5th university to apply for? I would like a non LNAT school (2 non LNAT, 3 LNAT), Russell group, top 20 in the UK (but in England, as I don’t want to practice law in Scotland), and with a nice campus, nice city, nice nightlight etc. So far I am thinking Exeter - what do you guys think?

My daughter is going to Exeter (results permitting) to do Law & French Law in September.
We were very impressed with the course, three straight years in Exeter and then the fourth year at Rennes. We spoke to a recent graduate who told us some students do choose not to complete the French year and can still graduate with an LLB after three years so that's good to know. The university has a lot going for it, lovely campus and town etc.

What are your A level predicted grades.

UCAS predicted 3A* - bit ambitious but for applications I’m not limited haha

Thank you!! I have another question - I’m not fluent in French by any means, I do it for A Level, and although I am predicted an A*, I’m afraid that my level won’t be good enough to understand the lectures in French, especially as there’ll be a lot of legal jargon (for reference I would say I’m about a B2 in French, but I watch a LOT of movies and YouTube in French, and I’ve started understanding about 90% without subtitles). Is your daughter fluent, and if not, how is she finding it?

Then why are are you describing your choices 'aspirational' when you meet the entry requirements. Do you actually mean 'ambitious'.

Yeah probably. On UCAS when choosing universities they describe those three as “aspirational” so I just lifted that word. Ambitious is probably the right one to use.

My daughter is the same as you. Not bilingual by any means. She has only learned French at school. My own French is very limited! She was predicted A*A*A with the A being French - so it is her weakest prediction! She enjoys it though and wants to do it and have the year living in France etc.
When we went to the offer holders day at Exeter and met the course leader he was very clear that the course is not only for bilingual students and A level students will be fine. They want you to pass at the end of the day so they offer a lot of support to help you get there. They provide notes and transcripts etc in both French and English. Honestly I wouldn't let it put you off. My daughter's offer was AAA but they emailed her to say if she firmed then they would reduce the offer to AAB or points equivalent. She chose to accept it over Bristol for that reason. I feel she will get her predicted grades but she liked the feeling of a little more leeway in her offer.
You asked how is she finding the course - she hasn't started yet, she just did her A levels and is awaiting the results next month! Good luck whatever you decide but Exeter is a great option. I know from the research my daughter did that many of the graduates go on to secure high level training contracts etc. It seems to be the only university in the UK to offer the Matrisse as a 4th year add on rather than integrated with year abroad in 3rd year, which offers students the option not to take it if they decide to just graduate with the LLB after three years. So it's a unique course from that point of view. Good luck with whatever you decide.

You're welcome. My son is at Warwick which I see is another of your choices so let me know if you have any questions about that!

There are a number of Universities below where you can study French Law. However, the only ones with a French degree are:
Leicester Maîtrise de Droit 'Droit Français et Anglais'
Exeter Master 1 (Maitrise en Droit)
Kings Maîtrise en droit (Master 1)
Queen Mary Maitrise en Droit (Master 1)
Essex Licence en Droit

first, props on your amazing predicted grades, it is not easy to be predicted 3A*s!! second, i would say exeter is a wonderful school, but i would say nottingham may be also be a good choice considering its balance of prestige and social life. please fact check me but i believe nottingham is higher ranked than exeter in law specifically! i was an offer holder for both exeter and nottingham and ended up choosing notts!! best of luck xx

No Maitrise at Nottingham as I understand it? If you're going to do French Law you might as well choose a course that offers the Maitrise.
