Vet med personal statement 2026

Hi- I'm applying for 2026 entry for vet med!! I'm really struggling with writing my personal statement , I keep getting stuck and everything I write seems to be horrible lol. If anyone has any advice on this I would really appreciate it!!
I'm also worried I don't have a wide enough range of work experience.
I've done :
2 weeks small animal vet
1 week equine vet
1 week horse breeding facility
Cambridge canine neurology lecture
2 years working at a stable
Edinburgh do you have what it takes to be a vet MOOC
Dairy production and management MOOC
book about zoonotic diseases
+booked day at abattoir (will only be completed after application)
+volunteer with under 5yo every week

Any and all advice welcome, thank you so much!

Hi!
I’m currently a vet student at the RVC and I’d say you have more than enough work experience. What’s more important is what you took away from the experience, what did you learn, what did the experience prompt you to research or did it change your mind on something.
The best advice I got for my personal statement was to make it flow like a story. Connect your experiences together, for example is there something that prompted to you to do additional research or is there something that could link the equine vet to the stable to the fertility clinic.
For example I did a research poster on treatment of aggression in dogs prompted by the banning of the XL bully, I then linked it to how one of the drugs I researched was used at the vet clinic to treat a dog with anxiety instead of aggression.
You could talk about a skill that volunteering taught you that is applicable to being a vet.
It took me so long to write my personal statement, so don’t worry about it. I also found getting others (teachers mainly) to read it and give feedback was helpful.
I hope this was helpful, best of luck with your application!

Depending on where you apply to the PS has varying levels of importance, but most vet schools hardly look at it. An exception is UCLan. They have a page which specifically details what they expect to find in the PS and if you follow their model you will have a PS that more than fulfills the requirements of any of the other schools.
Best of luck.
