Pupillage shopping list

Hi all,

I'm starting a criminal pupillage this october and just wanted some thoughts on what items I should get prior to starting:

Laptop - Is it advisable to get a new laptop, or would it be fine using my own personal laptop?

Mobile Phone - Would it be good to get a seperate mobile phone for work? Or, alternatively, perhaps a second sim for my current phone to have a seperate number for work?

Cabin Trolley - I've seen most Barristers using these to keep their wigs and gowns in. I take it a blue bag isnt needed and this would suffice?

Portable Charger - I imagine this would be useful.

Court attire - Of course, I'll need my wig and gown (which I have been asked to purchase before pupillage), and court tunics, etc

Also, is there anything that I should hold fire on purchasing as Chambers might be able to provide me with discounts, etc in a similar vein to how working with some corporate places can get you certain benefits? If it makes a difference my Chambers is one of the bigger ones in the country.

Congratulations! Suggestions below

Laptop - Check with chambers but your own will probably be fine unless it is already knackered. Your laptop may need new security software if your chambers does government work. Do not allow your laptop screen to be visible displaying client information in public places. Do not lose your laptop! The ICO and the BSB will be cross at you if you lose any device containing client info.

Phone - No need for a new one, extra sim card optional. Signal is more secure than Whatsapp for client info.

Bag - The embroidered blue robe bag is traditional, but a wheely bag is more practical. If you impress a Silk as junior one day, the Silk may award you a red bag. David Eady QC gave me my red bag when we won an important case in the Court of Appeal. After we lost the same case in the House of Lords I jokingly asked David if I should send the bag back, but he laughed and said to keep it.

Charger - Yes, chargers and power packs are useful.

Clothes - If you are planning to wear wing collars, buy more collar studs than you think you need. The front ones go missing, get stolen by colleagues, or magically transform themselves into back ones. Three suits is a good minimum, although most barristers have more. I am sure that most barristers only do the job because we like the clothes.

Discounts - ask your chambers. Apart from package deals on robes, I am not sure that there are many discounts available. Your first VAT return may be the only one in which you obtain a refund of VAT, because you have spent more on your practice than you received in fees. It's not uncommon for more senior barristers to give to new tenants or sell to them at low prices surplus desks, chairs, books, and so on.

Once you start doing your own cases, bring cigarettes to share with clients - it helps break the ice, and cigs are currency in prison.

Good luck!

You're welcome! I hope that one day you will have a red bag story to tell, and maybe will be in a position to hand out red bags to juniors.

By the way, your chambers may supply pens, notebooks, post it notes, and all that sort of thing.

Have you read and/or watched "Defending the Guilty"?
