How to get involved at Oxford

Hi! I am doing a masters at oxford university this coming academic year, and since I'm only going to be there for a year I want to make sure that I make the most of it. Is there any specific kind of event or society that would be fun to join or try, or any way to get involved? one of the things i'm hoping to do is I want to put on a play, but i'm not sure how feasible that is... Any suggestions or things you found fun would be much appreciated!!

Each college has a drama society. The university drama society is called OUDS. You can pitch for funding to any of the societies. Sometimes two or more college drama societies co-fund a production.

You advertise in Daily Information and/or on social media for actors, tech crew etc, and conduct auditions. You negotiate with your own college or another college to use a space in the college (indoor or outdoor), or you rent the Burton-Taylor Room* or another venue. You can rent equipment, costumes, props etc from Bermans, the RSC etc, or make your own.

Most plays run for a week during term time, and maybe longer if aiming at the tourist market with a summer garden production.

There are a bazillion clubs and societies at Oxford covering all known and some unknown sports and pastimes. Many are reasonably well funded. Get involved!

*Richard Burton, one of the greatest actors of his generation, loved his time at Oxford, and he and, after his death, Hollywood Goddess Elizabeth Taylor, who was still in love with her twice-ex-husband Burton, endowed a performance space called the Burton Room, later the Burton-Taylor Room.

Turn up to Freshers Fair or the equivalent and sign up for anything and everything that takes your fancy. It's perfectly feasible to keep one or two things going alongside a Masters. There's lots of opportunities for acting/theatre, in the city, at university level and in College. Remember, a high proportion of the student body are new every year, and everyone only has a short time there, you just have to sign up, turn up and put your hand up!

Yep, I agree with the others about just getting stuck in. See if there are any roles coming up for election on your college MCR committee - always worth doing. I also highly recommend getting involved with the ball committee if you can. There's usually an abundance of free wine tasting.

Totally possible to put on a play at Oxford. OUDS is a great place to start, they even support new producers and directors. You’ll meet people fast through that. Also join at least one college or university-wide society early, even just for the mailing lists, it opens up a ton of social doors
