Best Universities

Heyy guys,

What are the best/top universities for English and history and/or art history in or near London??

I'm interested in Studying either English Literature and History or English Literature and Art History (or possibly even Creative Writing) and I'm still researching which universities I'd be interested in going to and all I know for sure is that I want to go either in London or somewhere that isn't too far from London (around like an hour to an hour and a half away is the furthest I'll go)

So I was basically just wondering what people's opinions are and what you would all consider to be the best university for these subjects/courses in or near London??

There is no 'best' - however you think you can measure that. Each course will be very different - different 'flavour', different optional units, different teaching styles etc. Each Uni environment will be different - city/campus, big/small, then add in grade and subject requirements etc. And everyone has different interests, needs and comforts. What some other random persons thinks is wondrous won't necessarily be what you want - especially since most people on TSR have only been to one Uni.

This is why you go to Uni Open Days - to listen to subject presentations, look around, talk to current students, and think about the reality of being there. No-one else can actually do this for you - you do actually have to do this research and thinking-about what you want yourself.

I know I have to do the research and thinking etc myself and that's exact what I'm doing! I was basically just curious about peoples opinions/thoights and their own experiences at different unis etc (as in different unis from different people, not all from the same person lmao) like I'm not asking for actual facts or rankings on which is the best etc as I obviously know that's subjective and depends on multiple different factors and this is literally all a part of my own research lol.

Also I currently live absolutely nowhere near London so going to uni open days isn't exactly possible for me.

If you are interested in Creative Writing, check out what lectures there are on the course and in the wider department. There is no guarantee they will be there when you join, but it can help having someone who's writing in the same style, or area that you think you'd like to focus on.

As others have said, they are all soooo different so focusing on the smaller details and finding something where you go 'I'd really enjoy my 3 years there because of X reason' it could help 🙂

Hi there,

I think the best way to find the 'best' course for you is to visit universities on open days and get a feel for the courses that they are offering and what they will teach you and this will allow you to see if they align with your interests.

Another way could be to chat to students through some of the University websites for the course that you are interested in to find out how they find the course.

I hope this helps,

Oxford, Cambridge, the Courtauld Institute, and UCL. Birmingham might be worth a look.
