Grades are entry requirements. Your A Level grades will be predicted. Personal statement matter more.

Personal statements matter more than what?

More than the predicted grades when the university is deciding whether to accept your offer or not.

Many universities don't even read personal statements.

True -especially with the financial situation with universities wanting to accept more students, as long as the entry requirements are met, it will probably be fine, like in clearing. Or they might use AI to screen it. It’s just that when I was in year 13, my college banged on about making a good personal statement. The new format helps.

Good, yes. But the best PS in the world won't make up for a shortfall in grades.

Do universities care more about your grades or your experience/extracurricular. e.g. for like law or business

Hi miradudas,

I’m studying Business and Law at Exeter, so I can definitely share some insight.

What Do Universities Prioritize?

For Law and Business, grades are the first thing universities look at - they need to be high enough to meet entry requirements/contextual offers. So, your academic performance is crucial to get your foot in the door.

That said, experience and extracurriculars are also important! While they won’t always make up for low grades, they show your passion and commitment to the subject. Universities like Exeter value things like:

Work experience (e.g. internships, voluntary work)

Leadership roles and involvement in relevant clubs or societies

Any super-curricular activities that demonstrate your interest beyond schoolwork

So, What Matters Most?

Grades get you in, but experience helps you stand out in your personal statement.

If you have a strong background in extracurriculars or relevant work experience, it’ll definitely strengthen your application.

Good luck with your application - feel free to ask if you need any more advice!

For courses like law or business, universities usually care more about your grades because entry requirements are grade-based. Extracurriculars can help your application stand out, especially for competitive courses, but strong grades are the main priority. You can go through our clearing team to know if the courses are available for clearing on this number 01227926000, or visit our clearing page -Clearing - Canterbury Christ Church University. We do also offer placement year for business courses in USA as well to gain work experience along with the course as we are top 10 in the Uk for employability as a university in UK right now. Worth checking the course on our website.
