failed my first year of my degree

I need some advice. I'll give some context. I completed a foundation year at MMU and then transferred to UCLAN into a 2 year accelerated program. I believe I've failed the first year as I've only passed one module. I have resits for semester 3 soon but I believe I'm going to fail them too. Would it be possible for me to take a gap year and maybe try for another course at another university as I'll probably have to resit this year and i don't really want to. I'm worried about funding and if I'll be accepted by another university or not.

Honestly - failing a year despite resits is a big red flag to any other University.
I think your most realistic options, if you do fail this year, are either completing the degree by yourself via the OU, or finding a non-degree pathway to your eventual career.

Hi there (:

I'm really sorry you’re going through all that stress - that sounds like a tough spot. But it’s not the end of the road!

First thing i'd reccomend is that you reach out to your current uni and explain how you're feeling. They can give you clear info on what you’ve completed and whether you could transfer into a different course and which unis would be potential options, alongisde if that module credits from this year would be able to be transferred. unis do this all the time so please dont feel afraid to reach out, they are there to help & support you through your higher education, even if this ends up being at a different uni (:

A planned gap year as you were mentioning sounds like a great idea, use that time to recharge, and this time would also allow you to explore thsse other courses beforehand so your a bit more sure of what your going to be doing & the options avaible🤗

funding wise plenty of students take gap years and reapply. uni financial support services, or student finance themselves, can often help explain what’s possible for deferrals or changes of course. - they should have a phone number or email which you can contact about this.

Ultimately, there’s no shame in changing direction if something isn’t working for you, wishing u the best of luck!! <33

For a home student, funding for another programme will be the main issue. If there is any shortfall, you’ll have to self fund those years at the start of the new degree.

You haven’t really addressed what went wrong twice on the current course. No point starting another one unless that’s resolved.

What if I was to apply to a different course with a different pathway? Also is it essential to mention the failed year to the next university I apply to or can I just give them the credits I received from MMU. Thank you

Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. I do plan on speaking to my personal tutor about the pathways I can take as I'm quite confused on my options. I do believe if I am to leave this course, I would choose a different course rather than the same one in a different university. Yes, I want to take the gap year to clearly think what degree I want to do rather than hastily make a decision. Thank you so much! I appreciate the advice

Would I not be able to use SFE? I was thinking if SFE can't fund my last year I could get a job during my gap year and save up money that way. Not sure if i'm being too delusional though. Things went wrong due to mainly 2 things, family deaths and health. My mental and physical health got extremely bad during this year. Also as my campus was in a small town, I had to move from the city and I struggled to make friends. I missed my family a lot too during this time so all the things kind of muddled up together.

Yes, you do have to admit to the failed year - its fraud if you omit this, which is something both UCAS and Unis take very seriously.

Good answers above already, the main issue will be funding the first year of the degree, which you may well have to cover.

Some universities probably would offer you a course, but your options certainly will be limited, and frankly you need to asses if the course offers you what you need, a lot of the courses are just going to be courses universities are desperate to fill up which are not always going to offer you much valuable education.

Most importantly you need to assess why you have failed? Identifying the root causes and addressing these first before you enroll into more programs.

You can use SFE but their eligibility calculation is based on the following:

Duration of the new degree + 1 year, then less however many years funding you’ve already taken

As above, if there is any shortfall you have to self fund this at the start of the new degree, not the end.

Sorry you’re going through this, accelerated courses are intense. Taking a gap year is possible, and many unis accept students who've changed paths, especially if you’re honest about your experience.

Student Finance usually funds a degree plus one extra year, so it depends on how they view your foundation year and current course. It’s worth calling them directly to check. Don’t lose hope, lots of people switch and end up doing great. You’ve still got options!
