Hello guys..I am considering psychology conversion course but with very limited mathematical ability to the point like simple basic maths..any suggestion regarding mathematical range.

The maths you need should be covered in a module called research methods, you would be best to check with a chosen university to ensure they cover it. However, there are tons of books and videos on youtube which will cover the basics so it'd be worth trying to cover some of them beforehand but you won't need to know anything super complicated! 🙂

If you do a Masters conversion like I did the Research Methods unit will help you with this. I strongly recommend a book called 'Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology' by Coolican which is an excellent resource to help. You will likely use a statistical analysis program such as SPSS which does most of the maths for you

Hi there!

It might be worth reaching out to the university you're thinking of applying to. Different universities teach statistics in different ways and often use different software, so finding out which one they use could be really helpful. Once you know, you can look up free tutorials on YouTube or see if they recommend any pre-reading or resources before the course starts.
That said, as others have mentioned in this thread, a lot of what you need will be taught as part of the course so don’t stress too much. But doing a bit of prep in advance could give you a confidence boost going in!

Hi there,

I'd check with the university directly first of all as some courses may be a little different or the university may have different expectations, but if they believe you meet the entry requirements for the course with your previous education then this should be enough.

As has been mentioned the research methods modules should cover everything you'd need to know in terms of the statistics side of things. It is important to have an understanding of the data and statistics you use within psychology and research but there is software which does the more complicated bits, rather than you needing to be able to perform and remember statistical equations yourself. It is more about being able to interpret the data collected in research, applying appropriate tests and methods, analysing statistics and understanding what it all actually means - which you should be taught how to do as part of the course. Sounds complicated at first but you will be walked through it all and helped to understand.

I hated maths previously in education but fell in love with the research methods side of psychology once I was learning about statistics in this way. I think because it is applied to real life and real observable examples, rather than just lots of numbers, I found it just made much more sense 😊

I saw the book Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology by Hugh Coolican has been mentioned which I also really recommend. It really helps walk you through things and has been an essential for me. If it's a bit overwhelming at first to consider all the statistical tests don't worry - keep reading, ask for help if needed, plus Youtube was a massive help for me in getting little concepts explained to me again and again. It could also be worth asking any university that you're looking at for some book recommendations so you can get a head start on any content.

I am more worried about the conceptual aspect of statistics than using a software ? What level of statistical math is required where there is no prior exposure to it

There wasn't much statistical analysis on the BPS accredited course I did. From what I remember it was largely in the research methods unit. True that there was the option to use statistical analysis as part of your dissertation, but you would of course have a supervisor to nudge you in the right direction for that. The book by Coolican 'Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology' was really useful.

Arden had really useful tutorial videos imbedded into the virtual learning environment which was really good.
