MSc Adult Nursing - City St Georges

Hello everyone,

I have been offered an informal offer to study MSc Adult Nursing at City University for September 2025.

I am excited to get started but the only thing that is making me hesitant is the work/study balance of it all. I am hoping to be working as a BANK HCA/care assistant/admin assistant during my Masters.

I was wondering if anyone has recently studied the MSc Nursing degree at City St Georges and if so, what the average uni timetable was like? I was told during the interview that average uni weeks would be 2 days per week, sometimes up to 3 or 5.

Any other advice/info on City Nursing masters would be great!

Thanks

I haven't done the course, but I have done a BSc nursing course. I suspect the MSc pre-reg is more intense due to the fitting in of 3yrs of theory content into 2yrs, so there will likely be an expectation of F/T commitment (extra reading, completion of online portfolio etc) despite the P/T timetabling of contact hours. That said, NHS professionals (the bank) lets you pick up shifts as-and-when, so you can pick up a shift if you've got a light week and leave it if you've got a heavy week work-wise. It's also really good for keeping your hand-in on the fundamentals and making connections for jobs when you qualify, but I'm guessing you already work in Band 3 or 4 roles, given you are on the MSc course?

Hi, thank you for your response. I did work as a Band 3 in the NHS so have that experience and I'm currently working some hours as a Care Assistant evenings/weekends. I guess placements are when its the most busy and full-time so most of the Bank part-time work will be when its Uni theory

Yes, but some theory weeks will be heavier than others (when you've got multiple assignments due, for example).

As you say, you'll be very unlikely to have time or energy for bank work when you're on placement because not only do you have the hours to think about, but you are also expected to be completing reflections and other academic work alongside. Plus, you'll be more tired on placement because you're actively learning new skills.

Hi!
The MSc Adult Nursing at City St George’s is a full-time 2-year course with a mix of lectures, practicals, and clinical placements. You’ll usually have about 2–3 days per week on campus during teaching weeks, but placement weeks can be full-time and less flexible.
Working as a Bank HCA or care assistant alongside your studies is possible if your shifts are flexible, especially during lighter teaching weeks. However, during placements, working extra hours may be difficult.
I recommend asking the programme team for a sample timetable and talking to your employer about flexible shifts. Managing your time and well-being will be important.
