Degree calculation

Hi, hoping someone can share some insight.

I’ve just finished my degree at University of Roehampton and I am trying to calculate my final grade, and ended up with an average of 68.9%. But I have also got 80 credits in final year with marks over 70%.

Is there any likelihood they will round this to a First?

Hi, hoping someone can share some insight.

I’ve just finished my degree at University of Roehampton and I am trying to calculate my final grade, and ended up with an average of 68.9%. But I have also got 80 credits in final year with marks over 70%.

Is there any likelihood they will round this to a First?

The short answer is "Yes". The longer answer is more nuanced.

If you take a look at section 25, Award and classification of Bachelor’s Degrees, in Roehampton's current regulations for taught degrees, here, you will note that the general approach is that, "Bachelor’s Degrees are classified on the basis of the average of the percentage marks in the best 100 credits at Level 6 and the next best 100 credits at Levels 5–6 which the student has achieved at the University (i.e. not through credit transfer), irrespective of subject and with no weighting between levels, rounded to the nearest whole number." Being pedantic, we know that you have not calculated your "average of 68.9%" according to the above,, as your result is not a whole number. This might suggest that other aspects of the way it's been calculated deviate from the regulations too.

From the same section, you will note that there are various scenarios where exceptions to the above would apply anyway:
"(e) .... For students registered on level 5 in 2020/1 there is a variation to the algorithm..."
"(f) For students who have completed an approved period of study abroad prior to September 2016, ..."
"(g) The Bachelor of Arts in Primary Education..."
"(h) The Bachelor of Fine Arts..."
"(i) If a student has qualified for a Bachelor’s Degree having completed a top-up year after being awarded a Foundation Degree by the University..."

Then there's Appendix A, "Programmes with variations to the Taught Degree Regulations" which lists some degrees programmes for which different rules apply.

Have you satisfied yourself that none of those exceptions apply?

If we are to assume that your final mark is 69% (i.e. "rounded to the nearest whole number") then the following applies:

"(l) Students who have achieved a weighted average mark (as calculated in (e), (f), (g) and (i) above) which is 1% below the boundary for the next classification, shall be awarded the higher classification if at least 60 credits at Level 6 are in the higher classification."

Given that you "got 80 credits in final year with marks over 70%", that clause would make your degree classification a First Class Honours.

Congratulations.
