Midwifery At LSBU

Hi I am starting Midwifery at London South Bank this year and just had some questions thanks,
1. How long into starting the course would you start placement?
2. Is placement always 3 days a week and how long are the placement blocks?
3. Will I have enough time for a part-time job?
4. What is the weekly routine of a student midwife?
5. How much uni work/ hours, when not in placement?

Hey there,

For Midwifery at LSBU, your placements begin quite early on in the course so that you can start applying what you’re learning in practice settings. This helps you to build your confidence and develop clinical skills from the beginning of your training.

Placements are organised in blocks throughout the three years of the course. The pattern is usually three shifts per week when on placement, and the length of the block can vary depending on the practice area you are in.
When it comes to balancing a part-time job, many students do work alongside their studies, but it’s important to keep in mind that Midwifery is a full-time course with significant placement and study commitments. Flexibility from an employer is key if you do choose to work.

A student midwife’s weekly routine will change depending on whether you are in theory (at university) or in practice (on placement). While at university, you will have lectures, seminars, and skills sessions scheduled across the week. Alongside this, you are expected to do independent study, assignments, and wider reading. When you are in placement, your routine follows your shift pattern with the clinical team you are placed with.

Just keep in mind that the course is structured so that you can balance both elements, but it is intensive, and you’ll need to be prepared to commit fully.

I hope this helps and feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
