Failed a module and asked to retake it in October?

Hello.

I've failed a module for my course (medicine), and the proposed reassessment is October. The next academic year starts in September.

What would happen then? Can I start the next academic year as normal? Will I be unable to start until I repeat this module's assessment and pass it?

Thanks

This is a question you need to direct to your course administrators and/or your personal tutor. They should be able to tell you how this works. If they don’t know, they should be able to point you to someone who does.

Hey,

Failing a module, especially in something as demanding as medicine, can feel overwhelming, but universities often have clear processes in place for situations like this.

In most cases, if your reassessment is scheduled for October after the academic year has already started in September, whether or not you can progress usually depends on how your university handles "progression with reassessment." Some universities will allow you to begin the next year provisionally, with the understanding that you must pass the reassessment in October to remain on the course. Others may require you to pass all core assessments first before officially progressing, especially in medicine, where each stage builds heavily on the last.

It’s definitely worth checking the exact wording in your course handbook or progression policy (most med schools outline this clearly), but you’ve done the right thing by reaching out early. If you haven’t already, it may help to speak directly with your course lead or academic advisor to clarify your individual case. They’ll be able to tell you whether you’ll be able to start the year normally or need to wait until you pass the reassessment.

And just to add, don’t be too hard on yourself. Failing one module doesn’t define your ability to be a doctor, and it’s clear you care about your course and future. October might feel far away, but you’ve got time to prepare and come back stronger. Reach out for support (study groups, revision sessions, tutoring, wellbeing teams, they’re all there for you) and take it one step at a time. You’ve got this 💪🏽

Good luck 😊
