Diagnostic Radiography at Uni

Hi!
I'm going into Yr 13 and honestly, I'm so confused about where to apply cuz of my grades
I don't want to move far, and currently the only uni's in my area that are providing this course are Salford and Bradford
My parents are willing to look at liverpool too
BUT, I'm currently predicted BBC
The B in biology is being disputed to an A because i've been getting A's and B's all year

I haven't attended any open days as of yet so I just wanted to hear from some people who have taken the course from those universities and what grades they got so I can apply strategically
(also to get an idea on what they wrote on their personal statements)

Alongside, I want to apply to optometry my parents are willing to only look at UoM and Aston
(i def don't have the grades for both) but Ik radiography allows for progression whereas optometry doesn't

I'm acc so confused

All help is welcome!!!

Hey @Hoori07 🤗

I've contacted the course leader and asked him if he can provide any tips/advice that might help you, or if he could arrange for a student on the course to get in touch and share their experience of applying for Diagnostic Radiography. I'll be back in touch when I hear back!

Have a great weekend!

Hello,

It is so nice to see that you are looking at our institution to study radiography.

I would recommend chatting to our course enquiries team to have a chat with them about everything to do with entry requirements, personal statements and how to attend an open day, if that is still something you are interested in doing.

To email our course enquiries teams it would be [email protected] they take up to five days to respond to any email.

You can also give them a call on 0161 295 4545 between the hours of 10am and 4pm, Monday - Friday.

All the best,
Matt

You won't be able to write a convincing personal statement for two different healthcare courses so you need to decide which career is more appealing to you. Have you had any shadowing experience for DR or optom? If not, you need to start contacting your local hospitals for DR. Ask for a day of shadowing experience (longer periods of 'work experience' tend to be turned down). Unis expect to see this in your application, along with some public-facing work/volunteering experience (in retail, charity shops, care homes, cafes, etc.).

There are other unis in the north that offer DR: Cumbria (Lancaster or Carlisle campus), Liverpool, Sheffield Hallam, Keele, Teesside (I presume you've excluded Leeds because of its higher entry requirements?). Some unis offer a foundation year if you don't meet the entry requirements - SHU and Derby off the top of my head.

The NHS course finder is a good tool to search for courses:

Thank you for your reply! I didn’t have an idea before that applying to 2 different healthcare professions could cause an issue with my personal statement 😅
But thank you so much your reply it was definitely a life saver
No independent opticians or specasavers in my area are offering work experience at the moment
Neither the hospital’s radiology departments near me too😞

However, I have managed to get some volunteering experience with a dementia support group and I have completed some online work experience to do with allied healthcare (that work experience was what actually introduced me to radiography)

I will keep an eye open though for any opportunities!

Hello! Thank you so much for your help 😊

Hey @Hoori07 🤗

Thanks for your patience! The course leader has emailed me back with the following:

It is great to know you are considering studying diagnostic radiography at Bradford. We are known for proving a strong support system to all out students and hands-on radiography training.

However, once your results are out, we can review them and advise on the best approach, especially if you have a strong personal statement. I recommend you attending an open day. We provide useful tips on writing personal statements.

In addition, you could arrange a visit to a local NHS trust, which would give you valuable insight on how a day feels working in the department for your personal reflection that will strengthen your statement.

I hope this helps!

Thank you

Becky
