How to Prepare for Dissertation?

Do you have to do a dissertation?
What are some of your academic writing tips?

One of the most challenging assignments during your final year at university is managing your time alongside numerous projects while somehow producing one of the longest pieces of writing you ever will in your life (unless you decide to do a PHD)!😉 Here are a few tips on how you can prepare for your dissertation or writing assignments before the start of term.

Create an Outline
If you have no idea what you are going to write about for your dissertation, do some brainstorming, think of research questions and write a brief proposal on what you would like to explore. This helps you avoid wasting time on indecision and allows you to start writing much clearer once you have consulted your tutor.🤗

Research and Academic Text
Read up and search for academic texts that you would like to use in advance. Personally, I find this one of the most time consuming and dreadful tasks whenever I am juggling other assignments and deadlines! If you already have an idea on what you are going to write on, why not start early and start saving articles, quotes or e-journals that are relevant to your topic. It helps to be organised and prepared. I tend to save any good quotes or texts I would like to use into a word document with all the page numbers and citations. This saves me tons of time when it comes to creating my bibliography at the end. 😙

Interviews
Depending on your course of study, you may find yourself in a scenario where you have to conduct interviews for your dissertation. Do some research on people you would like to interview, draft interview questions and reach out! You never know who might come back to you but it always helps to start early. 😊

Hi there!

This is a great idea, as writing your dissertation can be quite stressful.

Here are some of my tips for dissertation writing:

Talk to your tutors as soon as you can. They will be there for you and will be there to help you, so if you ever need anything make sure you ask them so that they can help you with this and answer your questions.

Start writing as soon as possible so that you have plenty of time to redraft and improve your work!

Try and be organised. I like to make a schedule so that I know what I have to do and when it needs to be done so that I can keep on top of all of it and make sure it is done on time!

I hope some of this helps,

Chat to your supervisor and come up with a plan on how to approach your project. Ensure that you know exactly what is due in when!

My biggest advice for a dissertation/research project is to write notes on everything you do. It's so annoying when you forget something you discussed with your supervisor or can't remember which primary paper was the source for a key discovery.

I'd also recommend having someone else read over your final draft. I'd become blind to some of the smaller mistakes which Word had missed as I'd been looking at it for months!

If you are a scientist - write out all lab-based protocols in full. This is really useful in case you need to repeat them so you don't have to keep asking your supervisor questions, but also I like having records of all my scientific protocols. When I was on placement, my manager told me he was still using buffer recipes from his undergraduate dissertation!
