October esat prep blog

I’m going to be doing the ESAT (engineering and science admissions test) in October and I thought this blog could be a place for people to like post what they are doing right now to prepare , how they are feeling and share like tips and tricks etc etc to perform the best we can.

Also decided to post this cuz it just turned August 1st so i gotta lock in

Sounds good let’s motivate each other 😀 I am worried about the time pressure and also fluency in some physics/ maths 2 questions

I've only just started looking at some of the ESAT content and my first thoughts are just to complete as many Physics and Maths (Pure + Mech) past papers as I can, and re-look over some of the harder GCSE physics content because I genuinely can't remember too much about transformers and half lives and other topics?????? I think thats what you're generally meant to do

Time pressure, mentioned by Maru1341, definitely a worry and I'd probably also worry about handwriting quality and start re-training my hands later this week because my hands will not be ready for a spontaneous cramp in october. Hardest questions i can possibly think of that are realistic are probably resolving forces with friction with slopes or moments/vectors with heavy algebra in them so year 2 mechanics revision is a must sorry for the yap

theres no friction or resolving 2d forces on the physics spec i think. it literally seems to be gcse

Yes a lot seems to be GCSE physics content that just needs a bit of refresher. And developing familiarity with A-level maths content.

Aside from content itself I’ve also been thinking about the actual exam set up. I’m doing a lot of prep directly onto past papers so it might be important to start working from a monitor because it’s such a time waster to copy things down onto paper… and as you said for that handwriting + neat working is going to be super important

I’m seriously worried about the time crunch like I think the physics module should be okay but Maths 2 is just looking insane , I think yeah il familiarise myself with the content for physics and for Maths 1 and 2 I’ll just do a bunch of ENGAA / NSAA papers and hope that helps☹️

no literally.... all of a level maths so far for me has been rewriting questions into my answer sheet or notebook and then solving, so sitting it will probably vastly different. didnt think about that part actually...

of course i will write key info into my working as always though because another element of the admissions test is they can see how you approach questions, and apparently that is quite important too.

The admissions tests are multiple choice though? How would they see your approach?

oh sorry i mixed interview and admissions elements a bit together. interviews they like to see your approach to questions even if you're wrong to see how you sort of work. this test they cant yeah

Hello! I am an incoming first-year Cambridge Physical Natural Sciences student who sat the ESAT last year. I achieved top scores in the ESAT, including an 8.9 in Maths 2, which obviously contributed to my success.

One thing that I noticed was that there weren't nearly enough practice resources available online for me to comprehensively prepare. In my experience, ESAT Ninja wasn't useful, with many errors on the website.

As a result, over the summer I have created 3 sets of Maths 1 practice papers for students to use, which I believe reflect the standard of the ESAT. I plan to create a set of papers for Maths 2 as well as for Physics (since these were the modules I sat). If you are interested in purchasing or want any general tips, please send me a PM and we can discuss pricings etc from there.

Thank you and good luck everyone!
