Advice on university applications

Hello everyone! Hope you’re doing well. I am going to be applying to certain universities next year and I wanted to know what makes a competitive application. I hope to get into a top 8 university. I am also unaware about how many universities you can apply to, what clearing is and what all documents (like the personal statement) the universities require. Thank you for your time!

Hey there!

That's fantastic that you're planning your university applications early!
Hopefully I can provide you some insight into what you need to succeed in your application to University.😀

Since you are looking to apply to some top Unis, you are going to need an outstanding application that will set you apart from all the other students.
To start, your grades are going to have to be excellent. Top Unis are looking for the best of the best, and that of course, means students with some of the best grades in the country. Usually, the minimum requirements for these Unis are AAB-AAA in your A-levels or international equivalent. They would also be looking to see that your GCSE's are also excellent too. High GCSE grades show these Unis that you are consistent and are an excellent student. If you have not already, thinking about doing an EPQ (extended project qualification) may be extremely beneficial to your application to these top Unis. Some of these Unis may even offer you a lowered grade requirement if you have done an EPQ, so definitely find out which of these Unis offer this!

Along with having excellent grades, an amazing personal statement is also needed. Unis go through so many statements during the application process, especially the top Unis in the country. Your personal statement has to be one that easily catches the eye of the University and shows them why you are a student deserving of a place at one of these top Uni. Talk about your passion for the subject. Where did this passion come from? What's driving this passion? What is it that makes you so passionate about it? Mentioning your experience or volunteering that you may have done. Valuable experience is so important to making your personal statement stand out. It shows that your passion is more than just words and gets put to use. What kind of experience do you have? Have you been to a conference or talk? Have you volunteered somewhere? How is your experience related to your subject? All of these things can make a difference in your application. You can mention what transferable skills you have from extracurricular activities that you do. Are you involved in clubs? Do you play any sports? How can these skills be transferred to your subject, and why is that important? These little details can really make you stand out. It's even worth mentioning if you have done any form of extra reading or research into your subject. Have you read a book by a famous academic? Have you seen a new breakthrough that occurred in your subject? These details help show your interest in your subject and that you have more than just a surface interest in it.

Strong references are also super important. Your teachers will provide references to your Uni, where they will speak of your academic ability and suitability for your desired course. So, really making sure that your references are as good as they can be is vital.

Some top Unis may also have admissions tests, which will look at your critical thinking to assess your aptitude for the subject to see whether you are a suitable student. You may also have interviews too where Unis will look into why you are the right student for the course.🤔

In terms of how many Unis you can apply to, you can apply to a maximum of five Unis or five courses. Oxford and Cambridge can not be applied to in the same year, so you can only apply to one or the other. From these choices, you will pick your firm choice and insurance choice.

Clearing is an extremely useful process which runs from July 5th to October 20th. Clearing allows you to find a place at Uni if you don't get an offer from your original choices. Clearing is nothing to be ashamed of if you have to use it. It provides you with a second chance and can still provide you with the opportunity to study somewhere amazing. You can even go through clearing if you change your mind about your original choices . You can also use it if your exam results are better than you thought and you want to go to a different Uni. Keep an open mind about clearing, as it can come in extremely handy if you do need to use it. Do take a look at Unis that you might want to go to if you have to use clearing, just so you have less stress around that time.

In terms of documents you need, you would need to provide your personal details, Education history, course choices, personal statement and references. I am sure your school will walk you through all the exact details you need, but you can go to UCAS to check what you need.

I would recommend going to the Uni websites that you are looking at and see what they want from an an applicant. It is worthwhile seeing what they expect and how you can prepare to meet or exceed their expectations. Cambridge and Oxford do outline this on their websites.

Hopefully this was useful and you have a bit of insight into what you need to succeed as an applicant to these Unis!

Good Luck on your application!🤝

Great to hear you’re planning! A strong application usually highlights good grades, a clear and focused personal statement, and any relevant experiences that show your interest in the subject. You can apply to up to five universities through UCAS. Clearing is a process that helps students find courses if they don’t get their offers, and you’ll need documents like predicted grades, references, and your personal statement. Wishing you the best with your applications!
