Soas 2026

hi guys! im planning on applying to SOAS this year to study for next year.. i want to study japanese language. but, my sixth form grades are lower than the expected, and i think ill be classed as a mature student next year? (i turn 21 next july) but even though my grades are low, i currently get japanese tutoring now weekly and i study in between lessons so i come hold basic conversations. will this give me any help as my grades dont meet the requirements listed on the website or are my chances still low?

Go for it!

Predicted grades are only part orf the application. Personal statement counts and carries significant weight. Show your aspiration and passion in Japanese. Good luck.

kind of late but my grades were lower than needed for the course and I know a few people on the Japanese course who also got lower than expected so I recommend definitely applying! I feel like soas is usually more lenient and actually takes people's passions more into consideration than a lot of other uni's ☺️ if you have any questions about the japanese please feel free to ask me!

Hi there,
As others have said below, your personal statement also holds weight for your application to SOAS. I would recommend giving it a shot and try to flesh out your interest in Japanese and the steps you've taken to improve. This will show that you have taken the initiative to improve upon your skills and your commitment to Japanese studies.

Good luck!
Sarah
