Writing an Appeal

Good afternoon,

Can anyone provide me with any advice on writing an academic appeal at university in regards of an exclusion from an UG Degree course? I really want to continue my studies. What advice would you give me? I need all the advice that I can get.

On what grounds are you appealing? Have you spoken to your Student Union?

Student Union sent me a form to sign and send to them. It's called a request form asking what my situation is. I had some issues and two assignments weren't submitted. Once the two assignments are submitted, I can progress onto the Third Year. I just need to appeal this exclusion.

They key part here is detailing the "some issues" in your appeal. IE. Why you didn't advise the uni of them previously, or if you did, why they still prevented you from submitting the work.

Do I have the right to appeal and exclusion as it's something I've never done before?

You can still be excluded for a first time offence. It just depends what it was and what the unis rules are for dealing with it.

You can appeal anything you like, but “I’ve never done it before” is unlikely to hold much weight by itself.

I mean that I have never had to submit an appeal before involving an exclusion.

Yes, you can appeal an exclusion.

Importantly you can't just do so because you want them to change their mind. You have to evidence that they either haven't followed their procedure correctly OR that you are providing new material about your circumstances that was not available before.

Alternatively it's likely that an appeal can be made on the basis of the decision not being reasonable.

This would include things like:

the case against you being found proved when there was insufficient evidence to support the charge

the penalty given being unreasonably harsh under the circumstances
