What are the options for students to earn while studying in uk?

What are the various opportunities available for students to earn money while pursuing their education in the UK? This includes part-time jobs, internships, freelance work, on-campus roles, and online income sources. How can international students legally work during their studies, and what restrictions or benefits apply to them under UK law?

Hi @Kapil1

I hope you are well! To earn some money alongside my studies at uni, I work for a company called Unitemps! Unitemps is a university run recruitment service connecting students and graduates with temporary jobs in universities and local businesses.

My role as a student ambassador at Unitemps involves me answering questions like yours from students and also helping prospective students for LJMU specifically! It is 5 hours a week and can be done on my laptop at anytime, wherever I am. Working this job has definitely helped me to gain abit of extra income and take the stress off money whilst at uni. I would highly recommend it and the hours you work are fitted around your workload and never interfere with anything that you need to do for uni! It is not just a student ambassador role that you can do through unitemps there are various different opportunities and by signing up online or during the freshers week, you will be sent all the opportunites that become available and if any of them take your fancy then you simply just sign up!

The option to help at open days and campus tours etc at your uni is also available during the role I do, so if I ever wanted some extra money I simply just put my name down for the next one!

I hope this has answered a part of your question and hopefully other people will be able to inform you of any other jobs that are suitable for students! Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hi @Kapil1 😊,

I am an International student at Swansea University, so I think I will be able to give some insight!

The student ambassador scheme is a great part-time job provided by the uni. You are able to work on Open Days and other events for the university. If you are on a Student visa (previously known as a Tier 4 visa), during term time, students can work part-time, up to 20 hours per week. This means you could get any part-time job during semesters as long as they adhere to this. Many of my friends work at fast-food places or student-centred organisations during the term. Outside of term times, so during breaks, you are able to work full-time. This means you can work as much as you would through things like internships, etc.

So you are able to work all the time, you just need to be aware of the amount of time per week if you are working during term time. Also note, the UK does not permit engaging in self-employment or business activity, including freelancing. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions or would like advice, let me know!☺️

Hi!
As an international student in the UK, I'm restricted to working 20 hours a week, but honestly, doing any more would be unreasonable and affect my studies negatively.
Many unis, including Lancaster, have their own recruitment websites where they advertise available jobs - very often those are part-time roles for students. Through them I currently work as a Student Ambassador (the job I'm going right now by messaging you!) and an Exam Invigilator (which probably won't be available for undergrads though). I've also previously worked for the Student Registry and the Students' Union. These have been part-time, often short-term roles with hours that are not fixed, meaning that you might have 20 hours one week, and 0 hours the next. For me this works great as I have regular income from my PhD funding and don't necessarily have to rely on the income of my part-time work to support myself, but I understand that this might not be the case for everyone.
There are also usually jobs with more regular hours, like retail assistant - it's worth looking and seeing what your options are! In a nutshell, find out if your uni has a similar service and start from there.

Hope this was helpful!

Hi Kapil1, similar to what other ambassadors have said here, there are many options to earn whilst you learn at universities in the UK.
Specifically at Lancaster, I have found there are so many opportunities within the university (often department specific, so you can get experience in and around your subject) which have competitive rates of pay and are very flexible, since they are designed for students.
Many jobs are internship style, meaning they only last for a short period, but can be great for just a few hours a week, and the application process helps you refine your interview techniques, CV and cover letter skills.
In my first year, I was a student ambassador, completed a law internship and was a Unibuddy (an online role which is very flexible), which have developed my experience and helped me afford university, its been great!
I hope this helps, I'd definitely recommend applying for as much as you can!
