Laptop for studying politics at uni

I was just wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations for laptops for a politics degree?
I’ve heard I only really need a basic one as the only programmes I’d need to run are things like word etc, but I don’t have much laptop knowledge lol so was hoping someone could let me know of the model they have & if it’s any good?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I am a Cyber Security student at DMU, so my specialisation is more in laptops than politics😅
However, as a general advice I can say that for convenient work you would need a machine that is at least 8GB of RAM and at least 256GB of hard drive / SSD. If I were you, my main focus would be on battery life and weight of the laptop. Try to get something with long battery life and not too heavy.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Ilya

Hi there,

I don't study politics, but I do have a laptop that I love!

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad before I went to university, and it has been fantastic. It is lightweight, has enough storage, and has everything I need to complete university work to a high standard. I even use it for large games, and it works just fine! The only issue I have had is that I had to replace the battery once. However, I was able to do it myself, it wasn't a huge cost, and it has lasted for years since.

It would definitely be worth taking a look at Lenovo, as they have some pretty great options for different needs.

I hope this helps!

Hi There,

I think there is so much choice these days, which can make the decision super tough! I would advise you to have a think about some of the things that you want the device to be able to do - is it just to write notes and read lecture slides. I have a Windows laptop, and this works perfectly fine for all the things mentioned.

I hope this helps,

Hey there,

This is a really tricky question because there are so many good laptops out there! I study Business Management and I have been using a Macbook for the past two years and it has been very convenient for me. I personally find it quite easy to use for note taking, research, operating the Microsoft Suite, preparing presentations, writing job applications, and also watching shows!

I think that if you already have a laptop, then it might be a good idea to use it for the initial few weeks before making a purchase to see what your course requirements are specifically and what your coursemates tend to use.

I hope this helps!

All the best,
