Usual advice for your 5 choices is :

1 choice just above your predicted grades - risky bit you may still get an offer

3 choices at your predicted grades - these are your most likely offers

At least 1 choice several grades below your predicted grades - this is your potential Insurance choice

Also, think about what will suit you best - 'campus Uni' or 'city Uni', big or small Uni, big city or smaller place - and the practicalities like cost of housing and getting home etc.

Going to Open Days is the best way to get a feeling for that Uni and the course on offer. And there are Campus Tour films etc for most Unis on YouTube.

Hello @ilomilo2

First of all I would strongly advise that you do not restrict yourself to a certain category of university such as Russell Group universities or other "high performing" or "prestigious" universities. You need to find somewhere that you will be happy to call home, where you will be comfortable and be able to make the most of all the opportunities and do your very best. There are many people who go to Russell Group universities who later regret this decision and want to transfer to somewhere else. Also, not all Russell Group universities are as good as they are made out to be. For instance, when I was looking at universities, I was set on going to a Russell Group university but actually went to a non-Russell Group university because the Russell Group universities, amongst other reasons, were just not as friendly as the other universities I visited.

You need to look at what is important for you for a university, including location, option modules available, etc and then go to as many open days as possible. From that, you will then need to pick 5 universities to apply to, and I would again strongly encourage you to listen to your gut instinct rather than your heart because your gut instinct is likely to be more right than what your heart is telling you.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions or anything at all please do not hesitate to let me know.
