Chemistry degree with industrial placement or year abroad?

Hi,

Deciding which degree to do. Abroad or industrial placement. Has anyone got any recommendation of which one is best? In terms of money, enjoyment and prospects. Interested in going into energy industry or pharma.

If a Uni offers both options, its often possible to make a final decision about this after you have actually started the course - or to switch between the two. Usually there is a common first-year of teaching and there are therefore not specific recruitment/offer numbers for SA or a placement - all 'Chemistry applications' are considered together. So, it also usually doesnt make any sense to apply for both options on the same course - you could be wasting a choice.

Some Unis have paid placements, others may not. Some expect you to find your own placement, others give you lots of help. Each Uni has different SA destinations, some may be more exciting or at better overseas Unis etc than others.

These are all good questions to either check with each Uni by email, or to ask at an Open Day.

industrial placement, not only do you get more work experience but you could apply to a placement abroad so you could still get to experience both in a way

Overseas placements are rare post-Brexit unless you have an EU passport.
