University of Essex - GCSE Requirement

Hi, I want to apply to Uni of Essex through clearing but I have GCSE 4 Maths and I want to do BSc or BA Economics.

It says I need GCSE Maths 5 but even if I do clearing is there any point of applying if it says I need a 5?

I'm a young unpaid carer so i dont know if that will help with my clearing application.

should I Just skip applying for Essex? or should I apply because they might consider me for clearing?

Do you have A level maths? What about A level physics?

If not, you would do a lot better by taking a gap year and asking them if they would take you if you pass for example 2 open university maths modules. Without good understand and confidence in maths you will never do well in Economics.

(Anyway I don't understand the point of getting most degrees unless you will get a 1st as most employer no longer consider a person with a "polite fail" as being worthwhile for a graduate job.)
GCSE requirements tend to be inflexible, even in clearing. But there is no harm calling to check.

Interestingly, neither course seems to have a maths GCSE requirement on their clearing pages.

Otoh, having looked at the modules you would be studying so you think you could handle all the mathematics involved?

Hi @pleasehelp24 👋

I can understand how you are feeling, I would strongly suggest you to call student services team for Essex and they will advise you further as sometimes grades can be quite flexible. They may consider you or give you an alternative so I would give Essex a call to ask first!

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions 😊

One issue is Essex will take a student who they believe will only get a 2:2, but a 2:2 in Economics is a worthless degree that just results in a higher lifetime income tax rate.
