anxious about starting university sport

I've been doing my sport for just under a year now (started in my gap year) and I feel really anxious about taking it to the next level at university.

Of course I am super excited, but they have a recruitment form for those who are experienced and have asked for PBs. I have a few and to be honest none of them are very good, and I don't know if I'm good enough to be on the experienced team at the uni, whether I'll be put in recreational or beginners, or just struggle to make any friends because of this.

I might be overthinking, but I'm quite anxious because it is a super cliquey sport, and I have no idea if I should message them to voice the anxieties or just fill out the form. They ask if you're experienced and for your PBs but also what team you want to join, and with my times its just not looking good.

Feeling a bit down and conflicted so if anyone has any advice it would be helpful!

Fill out the form honestly, and don't stress too much about being "good enough." The uni will likely place you in the right team based on your PBs and experience. If you're really unsure, consider reaching out to the sports department for guidance. Focus on enjoying the sport and making new friends who share your passion!

Personally I think you should voice your concerns it's better to let the coach know the position you are in 🫶🏻

Hi,

I sorry to hear that you are feeling this way. I would advise you to speak to the sports team about your concerns, as they will be able to advise you the best and tell you more about the society and what events are taking place within the University.

Just because you feel your PBs aren't good enough for the team does not mean that you will not be able to make friends. Generally, within sports team societies, all the teams and ability groups will mix during socials, so there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends.

I hope this helps,

Hi there!

I would fill out the form! You never know what kind of times other people at the uni will have, and while you think it isn't good enough, there may not be many people with 'better' times than you. I think it is worth filling it out, and you can ways voice your concerns too so that the coaches/staff know you are really interested.

Usually with sports teams there are a few depending on ability, so even if your times aren't as good as some other people, there may still be a second division team or another team you can join! You could always email the SU at the uni, or the sports team if you can, and ask them if there are other options or if there is just one team.

There are also usually social teams where it isn't as competitive and you won't need a strict time to be able to get in. These are fun too so I would consider joining one of these if you don't get into the one that you are hoping to get into!

I hope this helps,

Hey there,

I'm really sorry to hear that you are feeling this way. As others have said, I would recommend filling out the form and also directly reaching out to the sports team to share your concerns. It might be a good idea to let them know how you're feeling and that you are really keen to continue your sport and they'll be able to best offer you some guidance.

Generally speaking, most university sports teams offer different levels, from complete beginners to advanced players, and they welcome students with different levels of abilities. They also organise socials, which is a great way to meet new people and make friends in a more comfortable setting.

I remember feeling nervous about joining the kickboxing society when I first came to university because I had very little experience, but the society members were very welcoming, and they helped me feel comfortable and learn so much. So I would definitely recommend to follow your passion and continue to do your sport!

I hope this helps!

Hi, i am really sorry to hear you feel this way! do not worry and try not to feel anxious. My best advice here is to speak to the advisors for the sport your interested in as well as voicing your opinions in the form. Everything is so much better when you speak to someone about how your feeling. I hope this helped!😀

Just fill in the form as if you aren't experience, and with only a year or so, you aren't really. Much easier to be promoted rather than demoted!! University is where people try new sports, there are bound to be beginners and with them you will be more experienced and may be moved up to the uni team.
