Central Saint Martins Fashion BA/MA quality of teaching and technical skills

Central Saint Martins is known for its creative process and experimental approach, and especially renowned for its Fashion programme.

1. Are there any key differences and similarities one would highlight about its BA and MA Fashion Design programmes?

2. I've vaguely heard about the 'DIY' approach. I understand and like the importance of being independent and creative thinkers. However, I'd like to ask, what do people think about the quality of teaching and technical skills at CSM? Do students get technically proficient (sewing, construction, draping, pattern cutting, CAD illustration skills, tech packs) through the curriculum or do they mostly self learn so that they can attain internships and jobs at fashion houses or know at least key technical aspects to start their own label?

Cheers.

Hi @River~Melody

Unfortunately, I only have experience in a BA and MA course on Illustration at UAL:LCC. But in my experience, I felt that most of the time in my BA, we were expected to take a DIY approach. This was hard to adjust to at first, but UAL offers lots of workshops and technicians to help you hone your skills (in both BA and MA), which helps you to work independently. In my MA, although we were independent in choosing our own briefs, I felt better supported and had a better quality of teaching and technical skills, which prepared me better for professional life.

My basic understanding of the BA Fashion program is that it provides a broad foundation in fashion design, while the MA Fashion program is focused on specialised, in-depth exploration and development of a particular area within fashion design, often with a strong emphasis on independent research and a thesis
I would strongly recommend going to an open day, as you can ask tutors and students about the courses you're interested in, and they can give you more informed answers.

All the best!!🙂
