Grades on results day

If you did not meet the entry requirements for a university how much of your offer could you miss and still get in? I understand that the best case scenario is just missing an offer by one grade but what about more than one? Assuming they still have spaces when A-level results come out.

Normally, it could be one grade that you miss your offer by, but even then you wouldn't want it to be in a subject where you have a required grade in a certain subject, as that might be necessary to have. Nevertheless, if you miss your offer, they are not obligated to give you a space - especially in a competitive university - alot of the spaces will be in clearing for those who have the grades but didn't get the offer - so the other way round. I'm not an expert in University stuff just speaking from what I've seen, heard and researched but if there's a specific university, then it would definitely be good to ask them.

No-one knows - so like everyone else, you will just have to wait for Thursday morning to find out. Try not to overthink all of this - all the endless 'what ifs' will drive you crazy. Lots of sensible info and advice here What happens on Results Day and Clearing - ** please read this first ** - The Student Room

Hi Rayyyyyyyyyy,

First of all try not to stress yourself too much before results day. I know the run up to results can be a stressful time but you’ve done your best and no amount of worrying will change anything!

In terms entry requirements, it varies from university to university. If a course is in clearing you are more likely to be accepted, even if you miss the standard requirements slightly. You will be able to see if a course is available for clearing on the universities website.

I would recommend having all the university clearing hotlines on hand for results day. This will save you the panic and likely make you feel more prepared. If on results day you do miss the grade requirements I would suggest first calling your chosen universities admissions team. They will be able to advise you and provide support.

These are some numbers you may find useful 😀

UCAS Support Line 0371 468 0 468.

National Careers Service 0800100900

Best of luck for results day and enjoy your summer!

So if you miss it by more than one grade and it’s a competitive university then it’s a guaranteed no? And if it was why even put you on hold and not just reject you immediately?

No, it's not a 'guaranteed no'. It depends on a range of factors. They may put you on hold for a range of reasons as well. The best thing to do is focus on other things for now as everything is out of your control at the moment. You'll find out everything from 8am this Thursday.

It's not a guaranteed no, from the information I have, but I guess if there's someone that met the offer and wants the course, etc. through clearing or whatever, they could be more inclined to take them but I'm sure they judge it based on a huge range of factorsz
