what are my interests? 🪻

I love linguistics, ever since I learnt about 'etymology' in year 7. languages is something I'm very passionate about, coming from a family of polyglots and finding it so fascinating.

I love history, especially history surrounding the middle east, as well as ancient history, classical antiquity, british history, and the 19th century onwards. this ties into my interest in geopolitics.

physics - I could go on about this for hours so I'm going to stop myself here.

I enjoy learning about philosophy too, neuroscience, economics, the history of computers and computer science, psychology, whatever else.

my adorable pet canaries

what I read reflects the sprawling nature of my interests, but when I buy a new book I usually look at the sci-fi, science, history, philosophy, and classic sections first.

Hiiiii! :hi: Welcome to GYG!

I felt literally THE SAME WAY when I did my GCSEs, I just felt I could have done so much better, that's kind of what's fueled me through Y12.
I'm going into Y13 this September, and we also seem to share a lot of interest: I'm a bit of a language nerd and want to get fluent in french, arabic and japanese and I love linguistics as well (I actually got my school to allow students to take part in the uk linguistics olympiad, it was really fun!), I'm also learning python currently, trying to improve my chess and finally I absolutely love reading, I've legit been reading every day since the start of the holidays. I've gone through quite a few series actually; my fav genres are murder mystery, fantasy and sci fi.
Also I do Bio, Chem, Maths, Further Maths and an EPQ at A Level.

Pet canaries 😍😍😍

Good luck on results day!

it's nice to see there's someone who relates, and I think you're right, seeing it as a motivation and lesson to improve next year is the best way to go about it :yep:
you're learning french and arabic too! japanese is a unique and intriguing language, you'd have such a broad reach in different grammar and sounds with your mix of languages! and I've had a go at some of the past olympiad questions and it does seem so fun - I might give it a go at some point
we do have so many similarities! I've been ranking my chess improvement by how many of my relatives I can now win against haha (elo is just a number).
I loveee my canaries  and thanks again for the luck, I'll need it :s-smilie::smile:

and we share 3 a-levels! but I have a lot of respect because it seems like there's a lot on your plate. how do you manage 4 a-levels and an EPQ? I was considering doing the same, but I didn't think I could also handle an EPQ! and all the best for year 13, I'm sure you'll do amazing

Yh, I think I personally needed it as motivation or else I would just be thinking about how i could have done better in GCSEs 24/7 and it would have just stressed me out so much.
Languages are just soo cool, even all the grammar and stuff 🤩
I normally play some chess at breaktimes/lunchtimes with my friends at school, but I've started playing more online recently (it also doesn't help that I don't have relatives who know how to play chess or are willing ton learn

Thank you! I feel 4 A levels and an EPQ is a bit easier for me, mainly because I did IGCSE Further Maths, which covers a lot of the pure content and some mechanics content in A level Maths, so most maths lessons have basically been frees for me, which i've been able to do FM in. I don't think 4 A levels and an epq is too hard tho, it's just keeping on top of everything, especially FM and EPQ. It also helps if you have an EPQ topic that you're thoroughly invested in; mine isn't anything to do with my subjects or medicine, its actually about how the life of mary shelley and external societal factors impacted her writing of her book frankenstein, I decided my topic in my y11 summer so that I could just get straight to reseaerching when school started.

I agree. I think that's completely fine, playing with friends is SO fun. online can lowk be scary but I love how it saves all your games, it's really useful.
that makes sense, I wish I got the chance to do further maths. that's quite inspiring! and a smart move to choose an interesting topic early on :yep:. how much time do you spend on it? I think I might actually give it a go

what I did today 🕯️

hoovered + tidied my room

finally completed all my bridging materials :woohoo:(it was so much easier than I thought it would be!!)

thoughts 🥐
I overslept and woke up pretty late at 11:40 :s-smilie: I was hoping to do more today and to at least get some violin practise in, but I'm not going to let that demotivate me. I think I'll start with my goals in the morning tomorrow so that I can update along the way and make a bigger reality out of actually doing them.

my rough plan for tomorrow ☀️

(a BIGG thank you to all the kind people who I've met so far! :jumphug:)

I'm not sure quite how much time I've spent on it so far, but it's generally a slow burn thing for me, and then I sometimes just get randomly motivated and do a lot of it in 1 go. If I spent 1-3 hours on it every week during term time, and basically just caught up on anything in half terms and stuff. Also, I'm not sure whether your school would do EPQ during Y12 to finish it in Y13, or do it in Y13, bcus I started my EPQ in October of Y12

Congrats on completing the bridging materials! Also why does that picture look so aesthetic? Like it looks like it could be the thumbnail of one of those academic validation compilations on yt. I'm also trying to get into the habit of practicing maths in the morning; I try to get through at least one MOG/SMC paper every morning

our school has us finish the EPQ by april of yr 12 and said that we'd spend roughly 6hrs a week, which seems intense - but ykw you've inspired me, I filled in the interest form. If I find a-level maths calm enough I might just manage :groovy:

omg thank u , those compilations carried me through yr 11 I won't lie. and yesss that's a really good habit - best of luck for when you do the SMC/MOG, the UKMT challenges are really fun but I know it gets serious in the SMC/MOG since top scorers qualify for the BMO! you got this.

hiii and good morning! I started my day practising harder vector questions. I woke up a little earlier today so I'm hoping to get more done. I'll cross off my goals throughout the day.

goals for today 🍪

practise differentiation

practise violin scales + current etudes (need to work on my rhythm)

day 3

hellooo! I woke up pretty late again today since we tried seeing the perseid meteor shower last night. sadly it wasn't dark enough, so we just looked at the stars.

I lost my mind having to export all my videos to the pc - I already exported them all from my phone to my ipad and turns out it's too much for my ipad to handle too  so now I've waited for 295 clips to upload onto dropbox and FINALLY I can continue

goals for today 🤍

finish editing

practise violin scales + etudes + learn a song for fun

python string manipulation

python checkio challenges

htb academy (just experimenting as a total beginner)

Good luck with your goals for today! Tbh I've been waking up late these holidays as well (primarily after I did ucat), but I actually need to start waking up earlier. Also I'm inspired by your consistency on here so far that I'll go and update my gyg

Well done! I personally feel like I didn't actually get vectors until like the day before I had the maths exam/further maths exam, its like they just clicked for me and then I understood. I do need to practice them, ill probably do that over the weekend. It's so cool that you're doing violin tho:I always wanted to do violin when I was younger but couldn't find a teacher, so I settled for flute

tysm, honestly one thing I was worried about when starting this blog, considering my history with procrastination, was me being inconsistent or dropping it - hopefully I can keep it up 🙏 please @ me in your gyg I'd love to follow it and support you there!!
vectors were so weird at first and tedious for me, but I know it's a weakness since in the actual maths paper 2(or 3?) the last question was a vector one and I got it wrong. I love violin, but that's very real - for me any IRL teachers are at least a 30min drive away from me and whilst my online one is lovely I can only properly progress with an IRL one. I love how the flute sounds. I have a LOT of respect for musicians, they always amaze me. u have lots of amazing skills and interests
