Results day - How are you coping...

Results day will soon be upon us, and we know that with it can come lots of mixed feelings.

Relief, joy, pride… sadness, anger and disappointment… & everything in between.

That’s why it’s so important that we try to focus on taking care of ourselves and keep in touch with how we’re coping.

Success can mean many things depending on the person. It might be helpful to reflect on what you feel others want for you off the back of your results, and what you want for yourself and how those results can fit how you feel and what you want are more important than what others may expect or what you see others doing too.

If you find yourself struggling with anything that results day might bring up for you, there are some things you can try to do to look after yourself:

💜 Try to get some rest the night before

💜 Look after your basic needs
Eat well, stay hydrated, stay active when you can as we know that exercise can help to release anxiety and boost your mood

💜 Set realistic expectations whatever happens, results day is a part of your journey

💜 Think about some of your go-to coping strategies or distractions and try to use those wherever needed.
This can depend on what works for you but things like mindfulness, breathing exercises, spending time with your pets or something creative such as drawing, journaling or simply writing your thoughts and feelings down to get them out of your head.

💡If you have any other coping strategy suggestions or recommendations, feel free to respond within the thread as others might find ideas really helpful! 💡

💜 Make a plan for the day try not to let your results be the only thing on your agenda.
Planning your day can help give you a sense of control and can secure you some well-needed distractions too.

💜 Treat yourself with compassion and understanding
Your results aren't the whole picture - they don't define you, your worth or your abilities.

Feeling pressure from results day, not getting the results you expect or even just having to sit with the uncertainty of what comes next can be incredibly difficult and, at times, distressing. It can often feel really isolating - even if you know that all your mates are getting their results too.

There’s support available if you need it, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. 🗣

You could consider your support network (friends, family), teachers or staff around on the day or it might be that you want a more confidential way to seek support depending on how you feel -which is where helplines can come in handy. Seeking peer support and advice (like so many do here on The Student Room) can be beneficial too.

For some, all these feelings can become really overwhelming and we know that for many young people this can lead to thoughts of suicide.
If results day is causing you to experience thoughts of suicide, please know that HOPELINE247 are here for you.

We offer free, confidential and anonymous support to anyone within the UK, aged 35 and under, who are experiencing thoughts of suicide. It’s a safe place to talk about those thoughts, and we are here to help you to explore how to manage and stay safe.

Success really does mean something different for each person, so focus on yourself and don't compare yourself to others. There will always be people who are better than you but that is their journey, not yours.

If things don't go to plan speak to those people who may be able to help such as your teachers, family, friends or even on here. We will be monitoring this account (@UoL Students) for increased hours over the next week and so if you have any questions or anything at all about anything please do not hesitate to let us know. We here like many student ambassadors from other universities, are all very keen to help you out.
