well, have you banged it?

What's your posture usually like?

Massage is usually for muscular problems, and this sounds like you actually have a spinal complaint. It won't be helped by massage.

It's probably nothing, but with lumps [ESPECIALLY ones by the spine] you can never be too cautious. Go get it checked out, and try not to fiddle with it.

didnt bang it, but i do have bad posture.. am trying to get it better though

it feels muscular, i thought it was, cos its like a strong ache, like when you pull a muscle, but its the lump that worrys me.. surely thats not muscle!!

If it's muscular, then you're lucky (or luckiER then if the ache wasn't muscular  ), but you should prolly see a physio and in the meantime, do some back extensions. They're quite good and try to keep your posture as straight as poss

Hope you get better soon

go to an osteopath

Best advice on this thread so far! Both my mother and I have weird backs and the only thing that's helped with both has been a trip to the osteopath.

Unless it's something like a cyst, it will be a muscular problem (possibly brought on by your spine being the wrong shape - either just naturally or from having bad posture). Although I can't stand them when it comes to backs, I suggest you go to your GP first to rule out cysts and such-like. If the GP thinks it's a muscular problem, see if you can get referred to an osteopath (it won't work, but you might as well try). In the meantime, you'll probably be prescribed some anti-inflammatories (if not, get some anyway - Nurofen does wonders for my back).

Step two: Book yourself an appointment with an osteopath, but tread carefully. The one I used to go to in Plymouth was absolutely brilliant, but I went to one in London a while ago and she just made it worse. You can't afford to make it worse, and I really despise her for what she did to me (while taking my money).

The osteopath won't just massage your aching muscles - he or she will give you tips on posture and a few exercises to make sure it doesn't happen again, if he or she is worth the money.

Where do you live? If you're in Devon or South London, I can recommend a couple of excellent ones (and tell you a particular one to avoid).

EDIT: Just looked at your post again and saw that you're in Cornwall - can you get to Plymouth easily? If so, get an appointment with a chap called David Moody in Ivybridge. I'll PM you with the phone number if you're interested.

painkillers will just suppress the pain temporarily but wont remove it completely..so they are good for short-time relief but not for long-time treatment
as mentioned before: osteopath is a good idea..but try to find one that uses shiatsu or rolfing - these two massage methods do really help ( I know it my self )

[EDIT]: oh and btw I hope you will get better soon
