Sheffield Hallam, Children’s Nursing

Hi, I’m a mature student (22) starting Sheffield Hallam in September doing children’s nursing. I wanted to create this thread to reach out to others attending the course or uni in September. As well as any advice or tips for before I start or first year in general.

Congratulations and good luck with the start of your course.
Don't think I've got much advice apart from to remember to look after yourself while you're working so hard learning and looking after patients. You are just as important as them.

Hi @SH_137 ,

Firstly, congratulations! We are so excited to have you here at Hallam with us 🙂

I hope you find some other students here who are starting Hallam in September! We also have a great ''chat to students' feature where you can talk to and ask questions to our current students which you might find helpful.

I don't do this course myself, but I can help with some general tips and advice!

Join a society! We have great societies here at Hallam and everyone I know who has joined one really enjoys it. They are really fun and great ways to get to know some new people too. They have great socials too and many have a bar crawl of some type on West Street!

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. We have a lovely community here and anyone will help you out - whether this be directions to a room, help with work or just general support. Everyone I have met here is friendly and welcoming!

A general tip I have is get involved with things. We have great 'give it a go' events here that our SU put on, as well as our societies and other events. I have found so many friends through doing this and they are fun too. If you ever try something and it isn't for you, thats completely fine too, there is no pressure.

Make use of the support options we have. They are really great and I didn't really do this until my final year but if I could go back I would definitely talk to my academic advisor more as they are so helpful.

I hope some of this helps, and above all enjoy yourself! Be yourself and you will naturally meet 'your people', and I hope you have a great few years here with us 🙂

Hello there, hope you're well and excited to start studying at Sheffield Hallam University! I would recommend for you to contact the student unions! - they should be able to give you advice and opportunities to meet new friends! Check out this webpage here (Hallam Students' Union - Home) and you can speak to current students here at Hallam (Chat to students | Sheffield Hallam University).
