1 hour commute to med school

Is a one hour commute to med school doable? On one hand I’d love to live out with friends but on the other hand, living out in London is so expensive and I wouldn’t get to spend much time with family either. Does anyone have any opinions one what to do?
Is that one hour door to door, or one hour train/bus plus then 10-30 minutes getting to/from stations and your house/the uni etc?

One is maybe doable but I suspect for a course like medicine which as I understand often has a high number of contact hours and many days in across the week, may be harder. The other is probably not feasible.

Bear in mind also you may have placements further afield than your uni so you should bear this in mind too.

One thing to be aware of is exam days if you're taking a train. Train strikes occur and a normal 1 hour commute can turn even more expensive or you may miss your exam.

Another thing is how tired you'll be if there's changes or walking etc. in between.

A couple people I know ended up living in accommodation for first year then commuted from home second year onwards after they felt it was feasible.

This is a very good point - I commute to uni and for exams I book a hotel near the uni which is expensive...

I was 2 hours early from my normal commute time for last year's exam and late trains meant I had to take a taxi. I ran through campus afterwards and managed to make it with 2 mins to spare (3 flights of stairs due to a broken lift) all wheezy for the first half hour of the exam. An expensive exam that day :ahhhhh:

Hi,

I didn't commute to medical school but I have plenty of friends who did. It is certainly possible, but take into account that med school has a lot of contact hours and a long commute will reduce the amount of time you have to study as well as to relax. You might also want to consider that sometimes you can be expected at placement very early or have to leave late at night, which might affect your travel - when I was on obs and gynae sometimes I was on the ward at 7am and sometimes I would leave in the middle of the night.

Please feel free to message if you have any other questions!
