A level choices

Hello everyone, I’m currently in year 11 and results day is next week for GCSE’s and so far my a level options are bio, chem, psychology and maths (my school does 4 and then I can drop one after year 12). I am definitely keeping bio, chem and psychology. For the fourth subject I dont know whether i want to do maths or sociology but whichever one it is im only doing it for a year and i know maths is harder so is it really worth doing it and by the way im predicted an 8. So help please. Maths or sociology??

What do you want to do with these A levels - apprenticeship, job, Uni?
Any ideas about a possible Uni course/subject or an eventual career?

Hello @zxrina,

That’s great to hear that you are planning on going to college!

I did sociology at A-level and I loved it as I am really interested in learning about politics and how society works. Some of the subjects we covered at my college included functionalism, marxism, feminism, education and the family. Unfortunately I didn’t do maths so can’t tell you about this subject, but I know that one of my friends did it at A-level and loved it.

I’d recommend to do whichever subject you think you would enjoy the most, and its a bonus if it links with your future career plans.

Do you have a particular area or job that you are interested in pursuing?

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any more questions!
Good luck with your GCSE results 🙂

Im going to sixth form and hoping to study dentistry at uni and Ive never done gcse sociology so I dont really know much about it. Is it anything close to psychology because I enjoy psychology?

Bio, Chem and pick whatever other subject you will enjoy studying and where you feel confident of a top grade. Don't worry about what you think 'looks good' or is 'relevant' - Unis really do not care.

Great that you already have a career plan in mind
Sociology and psychology do overlap and they both use research methods to create theories and study human behaviour and apply this to real life. However, sociology focuses more on how society and behaviour is shaped by norms, culture and social structures rather than how the mind works. I found this website explaining what sociology is which may help!
